NBR: Need some gift thoughts and suggestions

My mom is having a big year this year.  She turns 60 at the end of February, she is retiring from her job after 33 years Feb 26, and then her and my father are celebrating 40 years of marriage in June.

Me and my brother are throwing my parents a surprise anniversary party in June, so that is taken care of.

However I need gift suggestions for retirement and her 60th bday.  I googled for retirement ones and mainly what I found was clocks and picture frames neither of which I am looking for.

I also found a really good poem talking about retirement and I thought about framing that with her name and retirement date.  Is that cheesy?  I also am going to get her a really nice bouquet of flowers to take to her reception.  Anyone got any other ideas that I might could ponder?

I had thought about doing a 1950 (the year she was born) time capsule for her bday...like put things that I can find such as candy, a cd of the music from that year, etc in it.  Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thanks ladies!

  • I can't be of help w/the retirement thing as my mom won't retire until she absolutely has to (which should have been years ago but she's so frugal!!).  Anyways, for her 60th we did a storage box that was red (matches her family room fabrics) with one side a chalk board.  We put tons of things in it - books, gift cards (one to a spa) and things she loves.  She didn't  want a big deal made ouf of this birthday so she really appreciated it.  We made her dinner and the box serves as my nephews storage of toys at Grandma's!!!

  • Does she have any plans for retirement? When my Dad retired he planned on going fishing all the time so people bought him fishing poles and tackle boxes. However, others knew he would have a huge honey do list so they bought him paint rollers, screw drivers and hammers. I would suggest buying her something according to how she plans on spending her days.

  • Not sure about retirement, but what about making her a scrapbook for her b'day? You could fill it with pics growing up with your family, special events, your LO, etc.
