Pacifier vs. Thumb

I have researched and researched and decided to do the whole pacifier thing. My pediatrician likes the pacifier for bed because it is supposed to help with SIDs and because unlike the thumb it is something that can "disappear". I agreed and my daughter loved her pacifier.

Now she is 4 months old and teething. She chews on her hands most of the day and has re-discovered her thumb. When she gets sleepy she sucks her thumb.

Should I take her thumb out of her mouth and replace it with a pacifier? Should I let her suck her thumb?

I was hoping to keep her on the pacifier until 6 months and then wean her off. She only uses it for bed, and occasionally in the car (because she usually falls asleep).

Any thoughts?

Re: Pacifier vs. Thumb

  • I think at  4m there is no real harm in either one.  my son gave up on the paci at 6 months.  this could just be a phase in relation to teething and could pass.  finding a way to comfort herself will be beneficial right now.

  • I don't know why but all the Dr's and Therapists we see say the paci is best. My DD likes the chew her hands but we try and give her the paci as much as possible. I think its just whatever you think works best for your baby
