Questions to ask Pediatrician

So, we're meeting with a potential Ped. on Friday and besides asking their opinions on immunizations, BFing, hour/afterhours, will they see both babies in 1 visit, what other questions did you ask or wish that you did ask?

Re: Questions to ask Pediatrician

  • No information to help but a quick question... do you expect to pay only 1 copay to see them both in one visit or pay 2 copays for 1 visit?

  • This may be a better ? for the front desk staff, but I'd also find out average wait time after getting checked in until you actually see the dr. And average waiting time to actually get an appt.

I see a very in demand pedi and while he's a fabulous Dr., i've waited an hour before to get in the appt. from the waiting room. I also often need to schedule apts. 3 or 4 weeks ahead of time too or he's booked. I've considered switching b/c of it. Though luckily there are 2 other Dr's in the practice that are both great and much easier to book, so I can do that if needed. So, just take that into consideration as well. How long are you willing to wait?

Oh, and my practice "technically" says each baby needs to schedule their own appt. but both times we've been so far, they saw them both at once. I think it's just a scheduling thing, or maybe a billing thing (since you do get charged separately for each child).

It'll be 2 co-pays, at least mine is.

I expect to pay 2 copays, but hoping they can piggyback appointments so it'll save me a trip or time waiting in the waiting room between appts.

Thanks for the clarification.  I had budgeted in my FSA for 2 copays but I easily see how 2 back to back appts is best!!

  • It will be two copays, they are separate individuals even for insurance purposes.

I would ask if they have a separate sick v. healthy child waiting room and/or entrance, how many other doctors are in their practice, do they make house calls, do they accept emails, whether they have experience with preemies.

    Can you email them?

In terms of immunizations, you may want to go in with a general idea of what you'd like to do.  For example, if you want to delay some so that your DCs only get X shots per visit vs. some other delayed schedule vs. not getting all shots.

Also, the sick vs. well waiting room question may be better asked in terms of if you are in with well newborns, how do they limit your exposure to sick kids.  (My ped office doesn't have seperate waiting rooms because she's a single practice...however, particularly when DDs were little, they scheduled visits right before lunch or right after to limit exposure.  Also, we are generally taken to one of the exam rooms really quickly so we've seldome spent more than a couple minutes in the waiting room.)

When they like to see babies after they are discharged from the hospital and how to schedule their first visit.

  • Here's a list I'm currently working on... HTH!

    • How many appts. in the first year
    • How do we make sick baby appts.
    • Is someone on call nights/weekends? Is there a fee for calling?
    • Immunization schedule / feelings on delayed immunizations
    • Does hospital call her to come see baby?
    • Average wait time in waiting room
    • Practice if babies are premature?
    • Separate sick/well waiting areas?
    • I plan to breastfeed; is there a LC available with the practice? Someone you recommend?
    • SOP for developmental checkups ? are there tests you run?
    • Will we see you (the doctor) or Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (PNPs); what type of appt would we see which?
    • Affiliated with which hospital?
    • What symptoms warrant a phone call or appointment?
    • Average length of appointment times ? will mine be longer if charged/booked for twins? Squeezed into one appointment time? Will they book back to back appts?
    • How much time blocked out during the day for 'sick' kids?

  • We didn't find out until the babies were already born that the ped we had chosen wasn't certified to do circumcisions...my son was going to be the tenth one and THEN she would get her certificate...I don't think so, we had to opt out of that one before we ever left the hospital.
