3rd Trimester

Should I be concerned...Furbaby/LO Related

We bought our second car seat over the weekend and brought it home and set it in the living room.  As soon as we let our dogs out, my male (Brutus) went ballistic barking at the box.  My DH and I couldn't figure out why he was barking at the box.  After 15 minutes of trying to calm him down we finally realized he was barking at the picture of a baby on the side of the box.  If we turned the box to a side that didn't have the baby picture he was as calm as a cucumber.  Now DH is afraid that he is going to bark and be scared of LO.  Smile  Certainly Brutus will know the difference between a real baby and a picture of one...right???

  • LOL, that's funny.  I'd have that picture out to prep him because you just never know for sure.

  • Haha that is so funny. Poor guy... I would take that as a red flag and make sure you take their "meeting for the first time" very seriously.
  • Can you get the carseat out and strap a doll into it to get him used to it a little?

ETA, I would also have DH bring a swaddle blanket home from the hospital with the baby's scent and put it on the doll to help him get used to the smell.  I've heard good things about the actual meeting of the baby being outside or in the car as opposed to in the house where it is currently the dog's territory.

  • Have you ever taken him out around children, at a park or playground? Just let him look at kids running around and shrieking, if there are women with babies walk him closer to them. And also keep in mind that a two dimensional photo is going to be weirder to a dog brain than a flesh and blood 3D one. Dogs also go by shapes; a lot of dogs do not like people in hats or with big backpacks or other objects that make their shape non-person like, and that could be why this weird human box contraption set Brutus off.

  • Also: I seriously disagree that it sets off some major red flag. It's a picture on a box and it was weird and in his house and it freaked him out; it's not like he killed and ate a live baby, you know?

  • Babies give off sents like you and DH do, they are a mixture of both. As long as the dog know's yours/ dh's sents he should be ok. Just before you bring LO home, have DH bring home LO's blanket from the hospital, and let the know snuggle with it, or even smell it. Even after that I wouldn't leave the dog alone with LO.

We have a 7 year old daughter so he is use to kids being in our house and her playing with him but not younger babies.

This is a good idea about the car seat and doll.  I also plan on sending DH home with a blanket with the babies scent on it.

  • I didn't even think about a blanket with the babies scent and the car seat idea...that's great!  We have two car seats so this will work out perfectly!  Thanks for the suggestions!
  • That's funny! I agree bring a blanket with the baby's scent home so Brutus can get used the smell. We also started using baby lotion a little while before our DS was born so our dog was used to baby smells.
  • I've also heard you should bring the dog out to meet the baby, instead of them meeting indoors. I wouldn't consider it a red flag though, I'd chalk it up to my dog being a weirdo.

  • My dog doesn't bark because she just doesn't bark really, but she's afraid of everything baby related in our house right now.  She won't go near it and just puts herself to bed.  We've tried to get her used to it, but nothing has helped.  We're going to bring a blanket with us to the hospital to send home with my MIL (who will be watching the dog when I'm in the hospital) so she can get used to the smell of him and hopefully that will help.
