Burning in my throat, acid reflux?

I have this horrible burning in my throat and I'm pretty sure it's acid reflux. I've always had heartburn and acid reflux, but man, never like this. I can actually feel the acid traveling up my esophagus. Is this normal during pregnancy? Anyone else dealing with this and if so, what are you doing to help it? I'm trying to take Tums when I can and drink lots of milk and acid free stuff. Ugh, it's awful.

  • I drink a tall glass of chocolate milk.  It works for me.

  • Mine's been getting worse and worse.  Doc said it can get really bad towards the end because everything is gettting pushed up and bunched up.  I even get acid liquid stuff that comes up.  YUMMY!

I was told I can take any over-the-conter anti-acids.  Zantac works the best for me.  Good Luck!

  • Pepcid Complete...WAY better than tums.  They last 12 hours and are safe to take and have become a staple in my diet.

I feel the same way, and sometimes I swear I can actually hear it in the back of my throat! OB put me in Zantac. At least now I can sleep through the night.

  • Never had heartburn before I got pregnant but now its so bad I have to make sure I don't exceed the max dose of TUMS and I am pretty sure they have become their own food group already and every time I look at food I get heartburn...  It's ridiculous! Sometimes it gets so bad that I actually wake up choking on stomach acid... (Sorry if I grossed you out) Hang in there and know that it gets better when it's all over!
  • Zantec!  Would die without it!  You need to get some! Best relief ever.  It's just a daily pill in my day.  GL!
  • Mine was so bad after 36 weeks I would wake up choking on the acid.  Tried everything, milk, tums, sleeping elevated and nothing helped.    Finally broke down and asked my doc about it and he suggested Pepcid (20 mg) and its a lifesaver!

  • My OB gave me samples of Nexium and it worked wonders.  My insurance doesn't cover it so I'm on Prilosec and Tums.  Vanilla ice cream and super cold milk work for me between doses.  As much as I hate throwing up, sometimes it gets so bad that it helps if I can get it out of my body.  And usually happens when I bend over while brushing my teeth.
  • Mine has been TERRIBLE the last week or so and as of yet nothing is helping. I hate it. It hurts really bad.
  • Yep, that's acid reflux.  It's utter hell - I'm not gonna lie, and the worst part is, it's only going to get worse as your baby grows.  Zantac 150 combined with milk has worked for me.
  • I take Prevacid!  Life saver.

  • I had never had it before--and DH gets it all the time (almost every day).  I don't know how he lives!  It's miserable!

I used Tums for a while (2-3 before bed) until they stopped being enough a couple weeks ago.  Now, I take a Zantac about 30 minutes before bed.  It definitely works, especially with some milk.  I carry a small bottle of Tums in my purse just in case for during the day.

Also, avoid foods that seem to bring it on quickly.  For me, pizza is a guarantee nightmare.  Just be aware of what you're eating and how you react.

  • I had it before, during and probably after pregnancy. I take Prilosec everyday. I wouldn't be able to function without it!
  • I have been downing Mylanta, which my doctor said was okay to take. I am totally going to ask about the Pepcid since it is getting worse by the day.
