Tips for traveling with a toddler. Give 'em to me!

We are going on a 10-12 hour trip over memorial day weekend for a large family reunion. we are going to try and split the drive over two days. The longest we have traveled is 6 hours and she is pretty much maxed out on patience by then.

Give me all your suggestions for traveling. She will be about 19months old at the time.

Oh, and what are those dvd/tv things called you can strap to a headrest for them. We don't have any type of TV in our car, but i thought this might be a good reason for one for when she gets really fussy??

  • We did a 15 hour drive with DS when he was 17 months old. Having the portable DVD player really saved us, but we couldn't strap it to the seat in front of him b/c it was close enough that he could kick it. I ended up putting it on the thing between the 2 front seats and angling it toward him (we have an SUV).

It also helped him a lot that I sat in the backseat with him. He's ok back there on short trips by himself, but he liked the company on our longer trip.

I also went to the dollar store before we left and got a lot of little toys/books/etc that were brand new to him. I also wrapped each of them in tissue paper before we left to add in another layer of activity to each new toy. We also read a lot of books on our trip.

Good luck! If I think of anything else, I'll let you know!

  • Loading the player...
  • The portable DVD is a lifesaver, just dont pack all of the same video. We are both sick of hearing the theme to Might Machines.

DS also likes to sing, and after a while I just can't sing another round of ABC's or Old Macdonald anymore, so I now have music for DS in the van all the time.

  • Small board books

small toys in a tupperware type container he can stir

flashlight  (our is a crank, so even better because he can crank it and turn it on)

    multiple types of snacks

    new small toys

mostly soft stuff-it will all eventually get thrown at you.

toys to hang from the "oh ***" handle above the door.  We have a barn with 3 animals, one that makes noise.  it hangs on that hook the whole ride, and he'll forget it, then play with it, again and again!
