Update: She'll take $80 for swing

For the chocolate/pink starlight swing. (its the one with the sheer canopy over it)

(recap, a woman posted a CL ad for this swing, like new for $100... I offered her $80, since the ad said "OBO" and then she said she feels its worth 100...Okaaay, nevermind. I'd rather buy new and spend extra $60)

So now she said she'd take $80. So, pay $80 for a like new, gently used (but brand new looking) swing, OR $160 for instore price, and get receipt? Is that enough savings you think to be "worth it"? I will of course see that the swing works properly! She said her newborn briefly used it, and thats it.

Personally I would pay the full price just because of the guarantee of returning it, etc.

I personally wanted all new stuff for my lo....I think of it this way....if that baby had a brand new swing why can't my lo.

$80 sounds reasonable to me. Take the extra $$ you're saving and splurge on something else! We had the starlight swing for Zachary (the blue one) and he loved it.

Thanks. Well, my husband sort of wants to buy brand new too, it is our first baby so its not like we can experience this ever again (first time buying baby stuff!), but a part of me wants to be frugal, if its the exact item I want but for cheaper, makes *sense* to consider deals. However, the receipt/guarantee thing is what gets me on big purchases like swings...What if motor goes out? What if swing is recalled? Etc.....

If the item is recalled, I'm pretty sure the manufacturer is obligated to make the repair or replacement with or without a receipt. I'd buy the used one if it is in great condition.

Most of the time if it's recalled or the motor goes out you don't need the receipt because you'll be contacting the company that made the item and not the store where you bought it. We had our crib recalled and we didn't need the receipt. We've also had some toys from Fisher Price break and we didn't contact the store, we contacted the manufacturer because they are the ones that deal with those things. They didn't ask for a receipt either.

I think $80 is a good deal for that swing.

Really? Well, if I can get it fixed/exchanged from company, thats the most I care about. It sounds like this swing is straight out of box condition...(she was kinda stengy on price, LOL so maybe its just REALLY new) I guess if company would take care of any issues, theres no reason NOT to save $80. (BRU sells it for $160 + tax) $80 buys alot of other baby items.

Personally I'd buy the new one in blue on Amazon for $115. But that's just me, I never cared whether DD's things were "girly" colors or not.

our stroller also had a small recall and we just contacted the company for the repair kit. I think it hardly ever goes through the store.

my point&shoot camera has been having issues and we went straight to Canon because we knew Best Buy wouldn't do anything since it had been 6ish months since we bought it.

buy the swing from her. If its recalled the company takes it without a receipt...it could be 7 years old, they have to. test it in all settings etc, im sure its fine. spending twice as much is silly. Put the $80 in a savings acct for DD.

DH and I are pretty comfortable financially, and I've still found most of my baby stuff on CL. Some things, like the crib mattress and car seat, obviously should be new, but for things like swings and strollers we're definately not above buying "gently used". All of the moms I've talked to said that even the brand new stuff gets poop and spit up on it, so it doesn't stay brand new for very long. As far as I'm concerned, if you can save money on something that is still in great shape, then go for it. Baby doesn't care how much you spent.

We're coordinating everything, to be pink/brown basically... blue would just stick out too much.

Right.. we are getting everything new, the crib set is new, PnP is new (because I really specifically wanted a certain style/color/etc), but I did buy a gently used papasan bouncer (it LOOKS brand new), and I am getting some gently used/like new baby clothes. Some items I wont pass on CL, and some relatives find little neat things on Ebay sometimes. I keep finding alot of swings where the parents buy it, baby hates swinging, so it goes unused... so I was contemplating buying this item as gently used, IF I found the exact same one....I didn't figure I would though!

I think its better to get the pink one used then. And honestly some babies hate swings, so you wont waste a lot of money if she does. Its a good buy IMO.

True. Thanks, this helped me decide! I will check out the $80 one later today. I def wont feel as bad if baby didn't like it --- I can always put it back on CL for same price if baby hates it.

That seems like a lot for a used swing. Atleast with a new one if it stops working (and that's not uncommen) you can exchange it. I wouldn't pay more than $50 for a used swing.
