Talk to me about being induced

My Dr would like to set up a date to induce and Im slightly freaked out by the whole idea. If you were induced, can you just tell me about it. I would really appreciate hearing any stories, good and bad. I feel better when Im prepared! Thanks!!

Re: Talk to me about being induced

  • Mine was fine, just long (26-ish hours).  I had Cytotec overnight and then pitocin the next morning.  The contractions were fine until she broke my water, I got an epi a couple hours later.  The epi was fantastic!  I had no pain whatsoever after that, I pushed for about 30 minutes and had just a small tear.  I was freaked out too but at 41w3d I was sooo ready to be done with pregnancy.  I wouldn't hesitate to be induced again if need be.

  • I ended up being induced at 40w5d.  I was about 2cm and 30% when I went in. They broke my water at 3:35pm, which I barely felt (I was scared it was going to hurt). They waited a few hours to see if I'd progress on my own.  I did a little, but not much.  They started Pit about 8:30pm and my body reacted very quickly to that.  I was pushing about 11:40pm and Emily was born at 12:52am. My experience was way better then I expected.   GL
  • I was induced at 41 wks and 1 day.  My labor was about 6.5 hours and everything progressed quickly and went smoothly.  I had an epidural so I was able to stay pretty relaxed and I actually only had to push for about 20 minutes.
  • My induction was very easy.  I was scheduled for 230AM, (yes, in the MORNING, as in 2-1/2 hours after midnight), they started the pitocin at 3am ... then I slept for 6 hours, seriously, I slept through most of my labor.  When I woke up at 9am, I was 3 cm dilated and my contractions were 3 minutes apart ... wasn't feeling anything though ... until AFTER they broke my water.  Then I felt EVERYTHING and quickly requested my epidural.  I went from 3 cm dilated to 10 cm dilated in about 30 minutes, (again, I'm totally serious, and not exaggerating), and then after about 15 minutes of pushing, my LO was born at 1141AM.  So, I had less than 9 hours of labor, most of which I slept through.  But not all inductions are that easy.  Just as a point of reference, when I was induced, I was 95% effaced, but only a fingertip dilated.
  • Hi! I was induced 10 days ago and I had a great experience. I was glad not to be rushing to the hospital all crazy with contractions and I only pushed for 22 mins!

  • I was scheduled to be induced but my water started leaking before that day.  However, even though my water had started to leak, I wasn't dilated enough and wasn't contracting so they started Pitocin to induce labor.  They started it at a lower level and gradually turned it up higher when I was still not dilating.  The problem was that, when they bumped up the Pitocin, my epi hadn't kicked in yet so labor was VERY painful and unfun.  My recommendation, if you are planning on getting an epi, get it early before they bump up the Pitocin to higher levels.  You want your epi to take full effect before you feel contractions from Pitocin.  Trust me.

    Good luck to you!!

  • I was induced with both babies and it was so easy. With my first it took 16 hours from start to finish, with my second it took 8 hours. I went in, was hooked up to the monitors, IV and pitocin started, got my epi whenever I was ready, pushed when I was completely dilated, and babies were born. I was super relaxed through it all. With my son, the doctors and nurses laughed at me because I was watching a movie between pushes.

I was induced at 39 weeks and 3 days.  I was a high-risk pregnancy due to gestational diabetes and "advanced maternal age".  I'm over 35.  I

I had a small tear, but nothing that my doctor was overly concerned about.

  • I was induced at 40w4d because of low fluid, the day I went in we were due to schedule a date for induction anyways.  I went through cervidill on Monday night and pitocin Tuesday morning.  Nothing happened all day Tuesday so we stopped everything and started over again Tuesday night with cervidill and pitocin on Wednesday morning.  I got an epi on Wednesday because it was so painful to be checked and I still had not dilated at all or had any kind of contractions.  Then all of a sudden on Wednesday about 4pm I was 6cm and things went much quicker from there.  The overall experience wasn't bad just long.

  • I really wanted a completly natural birth experience, but at 4 days overdue and with the threat of my very large deductible resetting the next day(and we are on Cobra Insurance right now, so yes, cost was a factor) I was induced on December 31st.  I went through 3 12 hour rounds of Cervidil to dialate and soften my cervix.  The first 2 rounds of cervidil led to a little change, but nowhere near the 7 cm they wanted before starting pitocin.  The 36 hours on cervidil were mostly just boring.  My DH and I just slept, ate and watched movies.   About halfway through the 3rd dose of Cervidil I started contracting pretty regularly on my own.  By the time the doctor checked me after the 3rd dose I was at 7cm, 90% effaced.  We started the pitocin then and my contractions got strong fast.  After 20 minutes on pit, my contrax we coming about every 90 seconds, with some right on top of each other.  I was pushing after about 5 hours on pitocin, pushed for about an hour before meeting my little girl.  I was terrified of getting the pitocin because I had heard that pitocin contractions are so much worse than natural contractions.  I have nothing to compare my induced labor to, but it wasn't nearly as bad as I was expecting.  I was able to manage my labor without getting the epidural, so my labor was almost as natural as I had hoped.

    Good luck!

  • Mine was long and quite painful, but I am convinced it is b/c LO was sunny side up and had to turn while she was descending. I was induced at 41w, and Labored for 29hours but only pushed for 1 thank goodness. But, I think I would have had a very similar labor if I went spontaneous. I would do it again for sure.
  • I had a Cervadil application, which put me in early labor at 38 weeks (I had high BP). Started pitocin the next morning and had DD vaginally at 10:30 that night. The process start to finish was 36 hours (which meant I went that long without eating), but overall it was a good experience. Pushing was really, really hard and long (3.5 hours), but that was primarily because DD was sunny side up--I don't think it had anything to do with the induction.

I think a really key factor for a lot of women in having a good experience is how favorable you are for induction. I was at 2 cm and 90% effaced by the time we started, so my body was getting ready on its own.

  • My induction was fine but my delivery was terrible (not due to the induction).  I went in the hospital dilated to a 4 and 100% effaced and still labored with Pitocin for 14 hors.  I did not think Pitocin was so bad as people say on here.  I had an epi about 1 hour after my water broke.  We had a bad delivery because really should have had C-section due to CPD but my doctor thought she could do it no problem.  We ended up with me having a 4th degree episiotomy and my baby had a broken collar bone because she was stuck under my pelvic bone and they had to try and pull her out several times with a vaccum.  Also unrelated my epi wore off or was not in the right place so I felt everything after dilating to a 9.
  • I was induced at 36w4d because of high blood pressure/pre-eclampsia.  They started me off with a half dose of Misoprostol at 1am.  I wasn't planning on using any pain medication, but I had to almost immediately.  I couldn't get out of bed because I had a catheter since I was on magnesium to get my blood pressure down.  I had a huge urge to get out of bed and walk around, but I couldn't, and my whole body started shaking badly after the contractions started (about 15 minutes after the Misoprostol), so I was given nubain for the pain.  The nubain made me really sleepy and not care about the contractions I was feeling.  They gave me a full dose of Misoprostol at 4am, and were planning on starting me on pitocin around 7:30am.  At 7am, the contractions became painful and I asked for more pain medication.  They wanted to check me first and give me pitocin before they gave me an epidural.  I was only 2cm at 8am, so they didn't want to give me an epidural yet, so they gave me more nubain.  That didn't work.  The contractions were horrible and they were coming about every 30 seconds.  Around 8:30, they decided I should get an epidural because the contractions were so bad, but they had to give me a blood test first because I had so much blood in my urine and they had to check my platelets.  It was torture trying to sit still so they could draw blood because the contractions were so bad and non-stop.  They finally ok'd me for an epidural around 9am, but had problems giving it to me because of the constant contractions.  Finally, I got the epidural, they checked me, and I was 9cm (without any pitocin)!  It was time to push.  Pushing took about 20 minutes, and our baby boy James was born.  Pushing didn't hurt at all because I had the epidural.  The whole process took 8.5 hours, and the nurse told me that it would most likely take 1-3 days.  My advice--definitely get the epidural as soon as you can.

    What is CPD?

Im just scared because I dont feel like my body is ready. They are talking about doing it Friday at exactly 41 weeks. Right now Im 1 cm, -3, and 50%... and Ive never had a contraction that Im aware of. That just doesnt seem ready to me?

  • I had a horrible experience, I feel like my body just didn't respond well to anything...

I was being watched for development of pre-e and at 37w2d I went in for a check up of my BP and urine (and was also awaiting results of a 24 hr urine) and was told they found protein and I wasn't going home this time.  A couple hours later I was in L&D being induced with cervadil, 12 hours after that they broke my water and started pitocin and about 10 hours after that my labor ended in an emergency c-section due to failure to progress.

I had 2 failed epidurals, so I experienced a lot of the contractions and they were the absolute worst pain I have ever felt in my life.  All the details of my birth story are in my blog if you're interested.

Basically CPD just means that your pelvis size is not in proportion to the baby's size and so the baby cannot pass through easily.  My family has a history of this with all our babies so I knew it was going to be a problem and I tried to tell my doctor we would need a c-section most likely but she did not listen to me.  My mistake was that when things were not going well I should have just insisted on it but it was just so overwhelming.

  • I've had two Pitocin induced labor and they both went very well. Both times I was able to get my epidural before I felt any pain, and was able to really relax and enjoy the experience. I also had my babies less than six hours after Pit. was administered both times (it was my first and third child...second came spontaneously).
