Throwing Food On The Floor

Any creative ideas on how to stop your LO from throwing their food and cup on the floor? My LO will eat a little, throw a little, eat a little. Sometimes it seems he only throws the food he doesn't want to eat, but then other times he throws everything (what he likes and what he dislikes). I have tried removing the tray from him (hard to be consistant with this one because he has been sick lately and I worry about him not getting enough to eat), only giving him a little bit to eat at a time and telling him 'no'. I am so tired of picking up half his meal every night...

Re: Throwing Food On The Floor

  • We were having a really tough time with this recently and started doing two things. First, any food throwing means the meal is over. We would try again about a half hour later so that we didn't have to worry about him not getting enough to eat.

Second, we started offering choices. At first I didn't think he'd "get" it this early, but he actually caught on really quickly! We now offer him two options for breakfast and lunch (dinner he still pretty much just gets what we make), and whichever he reaches for is what he gets (he is not verbal yet). He has yet to throw anything he has "chosen."

  • We end the meal when she starts throwing her food.  It's usually something she only does when she's done eating anyway.  I do the same thing with her sippy cup when she's in the high chair.  If she obviously throws it on the floor I take it away.  She can have it after she gets out of the chair, but I don't allow her to throw anything on the floor from the high chair.
