3rd Trimester

Question about chores

So my SIL and BIL insist that I can't vacuum in my 3rd trimester.  Frankly, I think they are full of crap, and SIL must have pulled the wool over BIL's eyes.

What do you think?  Have you ever heard of this before? I'm tempted to ask my Doc about it at my next appointment.

Re: Question about chores

  • I have never heard that. Infact I know that they actually tell you to get down on your hands and knees and wash the floor as a way of trying to go into labor.

  • Thats ridiculous.  Maybe you shouldn't LIFT the vacuum and haul it around, but simply vacuuming?  Yeah, I do it every weekend.
  • I have been doing it the entire time. Not sure what the rules are...but I have felt fine doing it.
  • Why wouldn't you be able to vacuum?

  • I have never heard it before either, maybe it's something her mother told her, and she actually believed?

  • I still do most of the cleaning in our house (if not it would probably be a mess lol).  Probably more then pre-pg because of nesting.  I vacuum,  mop, etc.  The days where it feels more challenging I just try and brake it up.  I haven't heard that it wasn't okay my doctor said I could continue with the normal stuff as long as I feel up to it. Congrats and good luck!

  • SHHH!!!  Don't let my DH hear that...I've had him vacuuming our carpet (the living room) for months now ;) oh and sweeping/swiffering the kitchen.  Yeah, I'm lazy and my back hurts...shoot me.
  • Are you kidding? Good grief.
  • Unless you're using you abs to push & pull the vacuum I can't see that it's a problem. I think SIL is just super crafty!!

  • I know my mom insisted I shouldn't vacuum while I was recovering after DD1 was born, but I never heard not to do it while pregnant.

  • There's actually a little bit to it - something about the twisting motion of the vacuuming that isn't supposed to be great for pregnant women, however, I don't think its that big of a deal and am the one who does the vacuuming in this house (and will continue to the end).

I have no issue with someone who KNOWS its silly.  LMAO!  Good for you.  But at least you're not telling other people its a bad thing to be doing.

  • She insists her Doc told her this, but I really can't believe it.  I kinda want to ask my Doc because I think he'll think it is hysterical.

    TxTwister you are hilarious!!

  • Yeah, that's a load. Vacuuming is one of the things I've done all along since it doesn't require chemicals (DH does all the "chemical" cleaning except the floors).

  • I think SIL is full of it.  I have been doing all the normal cleaning that I have always done.  I definitely get worn out and winded quicker, but I just take breaks between each chore, room, etc.  As long as you feel fine, you're fine.  I wouldn't push yourself if it feels bad though.
  • Vacuum? That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard. That's possibly the least exhausting/intrusive chore out there next to dusting. I say vacuum away!
  • I've heard the opposite, I've read to vacuum so LO gets used to the noise and likes it when they are on the outside.

  • Full of crap.

But if it convinces your DH to do the vacuuming for you.... go for it!

  • I knew a lady who wasn't supposed to while pregnant, but she was extremely high risk. So for a normal pregnancy, it's ridiculous!!

It gets him out from in front of his xbox, so I see it as a win/win.  His brain for my comfort. ;)

  • So, its probably a load of crap, but I like your SIL's thinking, here.  Has she heard anything else about, say, the perils of having to fold and put away laundry?  Because I could fully support that, too. :)

  • I don't, but that is because I am on restricted activity and am supposed to be doing very little, since 29 weeks.  Since DH works out of the country and Iam home alone, I hired a cleaning lady.  I think really depends on your condition and your OB.

This is one I could jump on board with.  Especially the folding of socks.  I HATE folding socks.

  • Maybe she couldn't but any normal pg female can! Thanks for the laugh! She fooled him!

  • Vacuuming isn't something I've heard you shouldn't do, unless it's one of those canister ones that you have to bend over to pick up and move.

Interesting thing for those looking to enlist DH's help in more areas:  I was reading a book on post-pregnancy care and they suggested that a pregnant woman shouldn't do anything they have to bend over to do after 36 weeks and until 6 weeks after delivery.  This included things like unloading and loading the dishwasher, laundry, etc.

I joking told DH that after the next two weeks, he had all of the house duties.  He suggested I use a chair to sit in so I didn't have to bend over for those certain chores.   He was thinking too fast for it to work too well!

  • I think that's crap. The only thing I don't do is change the litter, lift the laundry baskets and scrub the showers b/c of bending and the chemicals used.

  • i haven't vacuumed in 2 years because i herniated my disc vacuuming....so if you do vacuum, be careful!  don't twist in a weird way haha
  • I vacuumed a few days before I had DS#1.  I've never asked my dr about it though.

  • That's comical.  This is my 3rd child and chasing, carrying and wrangling my just turned 2 yo boy is way more challenging and potentially dangerous then vaccuum.  I still lug my vacccuum and many other things all over the house.
