If you had/have a low placenta

I have a stupid question.  At my appt last week, doc said my placenta looked low.  She wasn't too concerned and said we'd check at 28 wks.  She didn't put me on pelvic rest and didn't tell me to do anything differently.  I didn't know what to ask then but ever since my mind is racing with questions.  I've put in a call to my nurse/doc but you know the drill...I'm waiting.

So my question is...if you have/had a low placenta, did it correct itself?  Were you told to take it easy exercise-wise?  Were you put on pelvic rest?  I'm trying not to freak myself out but I'm not going to lie...I'm a little nervous and every time I hurt, I'm scared something is wrong.

Re: If you had/have a low placenta

  • 90% of low-lying placentas correct themselves as the uterus grows and move up by the time  you are term.  Moms with a prior cesarean have a slightly higher risk of placenta previa.

Just make sure that if you have any vaginal bleeding, you call your doctor.

    Are you thinking of VBAC?

  • I had the same thing.  Technically 'placenta previa' but they also used the term 'low placenta.'  No special instructions either.  I think if it's really low or you have other symptoms like bleeding, then they may order bedrest.  I was told 30-ish percent of women have it and most of the time it corrects itself.  I was checked again at 32 weeks (ultrasound) and everything was fine.

Don't freak out!  It's not uncommon and I'm sure everything will be fine.  I was told if it happened to not correct itself then they just do a c/s because you can't deliver vaginally if the path is blocked.

You have to get a c/s anyway though, right?

I'd like to try and my doc said she'd let me if I go into labor myself and of course if everything looks ok

  • I had placenta praevia early on but I believe it had corrected itself between 20 and 25 weeks somewhere.  Can't recall exactly when.  I wasn't given any precautionary measures - I took daily walks but didn't do any other form of exercise.

  • I had it on the 20 week US, but it corrected itself by 24 weeks. I had no restrictions
  • I am in the same boat, they found mine at my big U/S.  I had mine done by my physican and he explained to me that low-lying placentas usually correct themselves as you uterus grows.  It is true that if you had a previous c/s you are more prone to this.  I believe that mine was 2 cm away from my cervix and that is the cut-off that they like.  He said we will so another U/S at about 30 weeks to see where we stand, I am a repeat c/s as well.  Another intersting fact is that all placentas are "previa" in from the start and are supposed to move up as the uterus grows.  He said nothing about pelvis rest.  Hope this helps:)  GL!!

  • I had one and it corrected itself by 30 weeks. No pelvic rest because it wasn't a true previa, just closer to my cervix than the doctor was comfortable with.

  • I also had it at my 18 week u/s.  No special instructions or pelvic rest.  OB called it placenta previa but said he was pretty confident it would correct itself at my 28 week u/s and it did.  I had a perfectly normal vaginal delivery at 38 weeks.

  • Mine did correct itself. I was put on pelvic rest for several weeks, but after it moved up, the restrictions were lifted. I was nervous like you, but apparently it's pretty common and in most cases, it does correct itself.
  • I had a low lying placenta early on, however it corrected itself.  My midwife wasn't concerned about it b/c she said it's common and usually is self-correcting.  I know it's hard, but try not to worry yourself too much about it.

  • I'm in the same boat--my doc will check it again at my next appointment but for now isn't worried about it.
