Baby shower gift ideas

Hey Ladies!

I'm a writer working on an upcoming article for The Nest and wanted to pick your brains! I'm looking for the best baby shower gifts. What items are you hoping to get at your shower. Please share the things you love, want, have to have! ?Thanks so much.

Re: Baby shower gift ideas

  • Diaper Cake ---LOVED this!  Not only did it give me a nice supply of diapers, but it had all kinds of cute toys on it for the baby!!

Baby Crochet/Knitted Hats --the sort of thing you can't register for, but are so beautiful on a newborn baby!

Gift card for Photographer --this was the most clever idea and I LOVED it b/c I didn't even think about doing this!  Now we don't have to pay when we want to go get LO's pic taken professionally!

  • Personally i would rather receive larger priced items (generally purchased by a group of people) because they can add up really fast! Plus, I can swing going back and buying the mid to lower priced items (as they are also the ones with coupons). However that said, I am appreciative for whatever anyone wants to provide to us for our LO.

  • The bassinet, stroller and bouncer were the most exciting shower gifts for me.

Lilypie Third Birthday tickers Lilypie First Birthday tickers
  • Well other than the obvious big gifts i.e. travel system, swing, and breast pumps. My favorite was homemade blankets with his name on them, homemade burp cloths, and diapers! Lol
  • The expensive items were the most helpful - pack n play, glider, etc.  I really loved the homemade/crochet stuff too.
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • Really, the best gifts were the big, practical items (stroller, car seat, etc) because we don't have to spend all that money on our own now.  I'd so much rather buy baby's clothes than a mattress.

However, we got an adorable hamper, FILLED with baby clothes - they were hung on a rope with clothes pins.  I had to pull the first outfit out with one end of the rope and we pulled it all the way across the room to show all the little outfits hanging there.  It was so cute and the sizes went from newborn to 12 months, so we have lots of great stuff for her first year.  I'm glad everyone didn't get clothes, but this was probably the most fun gift to open!

  • Where I am from the parents-to-be purchase the big items, so those are things that I have never seen at a shower.  What I am hoping to get are some pictures for the walls, bath necessities (because those are a ton of little things that add up quickly, but make a very nice gift), blankets, books to read to the baby, and honestly, I want tons of clothes because those can add up fast too!

  • Hi Lauren

I'm not confortable asking people for big items... (stroller, crib, carseats etc..) we bought that ourselves, and assumed most of the people will gave tons of cloths.. which has been true...

I'm still missing a couple of showers... but if I could speak openly.. I would say that I would love to have more colors in clothing... not that I hate pink.. but I'm really overloaded with it... that's the only suggestion I have... they are so many cute things for girls in other colors.. (purple, orange, red, brown... aqua..)

    GL!

  • I ditto what others have said about people going in together to get you some of the bigger items.  But I also loved getting personalized, monogrammed type things too.

  • My favorite were hand made things (like when people knitted hats and mittens for LO)
  • Aside from the big items, I ADORED guests who weren't afraid to fill out the random odds and ends on the registry that aren't exactly sexy, but definitely needed!  Stuff like the nasal aspirator, rectal thermometer, mattress pads, Baby Tylenol, etc

  • The Miracle Blanket, Bumpkins bibs, FIsher Price Little Lamb Swing, Cloud B Lamb, Baby Jogger City Mini, and my Skip Hop Diaper bag.
  • It is helpful when a group of people pitches in for a bigger-ticket item.

It is also very helpful when people put together a "gift basket" of stuff from the registry that isn't necessarily cute or fun, but that I NEED (like wipes, medicine, diaper rash cream, etc).

It was not helpful to receive a ton of clothes that I didn't register for. To me clothes are a really personal gift. Also not helpful - picture frames, memento-y items.

The biggest tip I can give is that the gift giver stick to the registry, unless he/she wants to give an item that is handmade, like a hat or mittens. You can't go wrong buying anything from the registry!

  • expensive items helped the most, glider, crib, pack n play, ect.

But other than that I have to say diapers. I got so many diapers last time around, and It really came in handy to have them. People got me Newborn sizes all the way up to size 3. I also didnt register for a specific brand, and I found it helpful to use all the different kinds people bought for me because then I could decide what brand I liked best, and what worked best for the baby.

  • I really loved all the clothing we received and was extremely grateful but I wish we would have received a few  more practical items like bottles, bath items, diapers, pacifiers exc. They aren't as cute as baby clothing but they are the items that are needed the most.
  • I loved stuff from my registry!  The gift-givers were probably shocked by my squeals of delight over a "whale of a tub" and crib sheets, but they were items I'd carefully chosen and really wanted.

Of the gifts I received that I didn't register for, I cherish the homemade gifts most, and I also enjoyed getting lots of classic children's books to start my baby's library.

As for creative but not homemade, my sister got me holiday outfits in the appropriate sizes and attached gift tags that said things like, "Happy 4th of July, baby!  Enjoy the fireworks! Love, Auntie."  Her gift was the biggest hit of the shower.

  • The best gifts are the ones off of my registry.  DH and I spent a lot of time figuring out what we thought was best for our baby.  So anything from that list is a winner in my book
  • I really hope that someone buys me my diaper bag. Everything else is a NEED, which a diaper bag is also a need, but this particular one is a want.

In general, I want gifts off of the registry-- which is why I spent so much time registering and researching. From my close friends, I trust them to get me personalized gifts-- with baby's name, etc.

  • Thank you so much Ladies!! Your ideas and enthusiasm were much appreciated!?
