BF, pumping, and supplementing

Hi all,

I only made it 2 wks bf-ing / pumping with DS, and I hope to do at least the same for the next 2 LO's. Please share your (real-life) schedules for mixing BF with formula feedings - esp if you are EP or doing all 3 - BF, pump, formula.

Part of the problem with DS was my flat nipples, trouble latching, and his voracious appetite that completely drained me. I refuse to use nipple shields again, so if LO's don't latch, I will probably EP and supplement. If they do, I will try a combo of the 3 or just BF and formula.

DH and I are considering a split-shift feeding once we are sure we can feed both babies alone. DH will do the 1st shift (until 1 am) and I will try to sleep from about 9-1 or 2.

Re: BF, pumping, and supplementing

  • i pump, the thought of BF two babies was too daunting for me. at first i made enough but now i dont so we sup. with F. i feed them and then pump for their next bottle. i mix what BM i do get with F in one bottle. i pump every time they eat so at first even when DH would do the feeding i would still get up to pump. which sucked when they were eating every three hours, but now they STTN so its not such a big deal. • I pumped for 3 months;  initially I had to use formula and then transitioned to breastmilk as my supply increased.  They eventually had 5/7 feedings via breastmilk, and the other 2  were formula, which I gave as the last 2 feedings of the night, given the theory that formula holds them longer during the night.

I will tell you this much;  if you plan on pumping and already have a toddler (not sure how old your DS is) you will need help to make it happen.  It takes a lot of time to build and maintain your supply, time taken from your firstborn.  I hated pumping personally, so I went easier on myself this time around and pumped as much as I possibly could, but not as long or routinely as I had done for my firstborn ( I EP'd with her for 6 months)

Good luck!!!!....by the way, I used to live in PHilly (Manayunk).

  • I pumped every 3 hours for the first week, then went to every 4 hours. I pumped every 4 hours until they were 2 months (I think--those days are a little fuzzy). I've been pumping every 6 hours ever since. My girls are 7 months 2 weeks old. I don't supplement. Actually, I could probably go to every 8 hours but I'm building quite the freezer stash so I can stop pumping asap, but I want them to have bm until at least 1 year.
