Aghh..Diaper Rash*** HELP

We have had them before but NEVER like this. She now has blisters and tonight when I changed her before bed she had a poopy diaper and when I wiped they bled.

We have all sorts of diaper cream but nothing has worked. I am thinking I may need to get a prescription at this point. Any home remedies or anything you can suggest?

Re: Aghh..Diaper Rash*** HELP

  • We used baths of baking soda and burts bees.   When Evie would be teething it would get really bad like you described.   She was miserable to the point that even cleaning her poopy behind with plain water was excruciating.

She did not like the baths or wiping of any kind, but the burts bees did help. We also used triple paste sometimes.

I hope she feels better.  Its not a bad idea to see if your pedi wants her to have a prescription.   A few times we had to use nystatin cream.

  • Thanks Michele. I was thinking baking soda too but like you said the water irritated her so much that she would just scream. I will suggest that to DH in the morning when he bathes her. And I think she is teething too.
  • definitely call the dr and get the nystatin that stuff works wonders-when the  boys even get a hint of rash I start using that and it clears it up by the end of the day
  • Thanks ladies, can the pedi just call it in or do they need to see her?
  • Poor Allison!  Caroline had that a few months ago - it was awful!  Hers was also a yeast infection (from being on antibiotics).  Every time I changed her diaper I alternated an antifungal w/diaper cream.  My best friend is a pharmacist and suggests mixing equal parts neosporin, antifungal, and diaper rash cream.

I hope it gets better soon!!

  • I have been dealing with horrendous diaper rash for months. Prior to the last compound rx we got I was using Lotramin ultra mixed with 1% hydrocortisone and that was what worked best for Colin. It worked quickly too. Put her in a warm bath with baking soda to dry it out. Try not to use baby wipes if possible. Colin has had it so badly that everytime he pooped I would have to put him in the bath. Sorry she has is so badly I know how painful it is for them. Hope she feels better.

  • If the blisters are bleeding, I think I would go to the Dr.  Those open wounds can just get infected so quickly.  My SIL used to get some kind of prescription stuff- they were like medicated strips that she would put in the diaper and it kind of numbed the pain while helping it heal. She swore it would clear the rash in a day but I have no idea what it was called.  This was about 10 years ago, but hopefully it's still out there.  Good luck- that is the worst!

  • Cornstarch is what my mom always suggested. GL that is the worst thing. :(
  • Yeah, I'd go to the doctor for blisters. Hayden has had thrush (yeast) and our pedi told us to mix hydrocortisone, lotrimin and triple paste.  It works.

This exactly!  It works really well.

  • Ok, this is going to sound crazy but my MIL swore by it with her 3 and it was the only thing that worked on Caroline and we tried it all. Take all purpose flour and brown it by itself in a skillet, cast iron if you have it. Stir it around until it is a caramel color. I then put it in a tupperware container and put it on C everytime diaper rash even threatened. She never had it again! When it was the worst I put some on her before she went to bed and by morning it was gone. Something about it just dries it up.

  • We just had our first case of bad diaper rash. The pedi said to mix lotrimin, bacitracin, and regular desitin. It did work. Our nanny swears by Dr. Smith's diaper cream. Its sold at publix i know. It sounds like it is probably a yeasy infection with the bleeding, so I would definitely use some lotrimin until you can get a prescription that might be faster acting. Good luck. I know its just miserable for them and breaks our hearts in the process.

  • Oh yeah. This subject was just on the Decaturmama board and everyone mentioned the same remedies plus taking baking soda baths, and letting her go without a diaper for 20 minutes at a time if you can.

Someone also said that mixing mylanta with diaper cream and powder helps soothe some. Something about taking the acid out of the poop.

I hope some of this will work for you.

  • Poor Allison : (  I'm so sorry!  I don't have any remedies, but I pray it goes away soon.

  • Do not use anymore wipes.  I would let her soak in the sink and let the water wash it off.  Wipes have alcohol in them and that will burn it and irritate it.  Baking soda works wonders in the bath.  Let it air out as much as possible (yes hard I know).  we didn't get bad diaper rash until we got our molars.
  • Ditto on not using the wipes--if you have to wipe her, I would use a warm wash cloth with baby oil or aquaphor.  Aerin had a really bad one a few months ago...we had to cut out wipes and just soak her in the tub with baking soda and air her out as much as possible.  Hope she feels better soon!!
  • Conner had a really bad one last week. I started putting him in the bath tub (100 times a day) and used a&d ointment. within a few days it was gone. I'm still putting the ointemnt on his bottom b/c now I'm paranoid. I hope she gets better soon.
  • We've been using aquaphlora (in the baby aisle at publix/target) first then putting destin on top of that. It seems to work on his rash that he gets from these antibotics.

  • We got a compound rx from pedi when we had our problems.  Cleared it up super quick! I would def put a call into the pedi, but try some of the other remedies that pp's mentioned in the meantime.
