umbilical cord

this awful thought just cross my mind.... can the babies get tangled up with their umbilical cord in utero?  i've heard of umbilical cords wrapped around babies necks right when they are getting delivered, but can it happen in the womb?

Re: umbilical cord

  • Yes, I was told it was fairly common to have the cord around their neck.  They did a cord blood flow test during my biophysical profile a couple days ago and were able to say fairly certainly that both of my babies were not tangled in their cords, but that it was still possible that it could happen.  Babies move around so much, it just happens sometimes and usually doesn't bother them.

  • Yes, it is possible. It happens often and it's usually fine.

But last week, a mom in my local MOTC went to her OB at 36w5d. They couldn't find heartbeats, did an emergency C-section and both girls had strangled in their umbilical cords. :( I'm not trying to scare you; like I said, it happens often and most of the time it's fine. (And some think cord strangling might be overdiagnosed if cause of death is unknown and they happened to have the cords around their neck.) I'm really glad I rented a Doppler during pregnancy for peace of mind.

  • Ditto the others. And if your babies are mono-mono twins, they can tangle in each others, but these are pretty rare.

  • two of mine were born with their cords around their necks. it's pretty common, but thankfully less common for them to die from it.
