Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Weight loss w/ Breastfeeding question...

Hi - I am just curious ... I have heard from so many that breastfeeding really helps you loose the baby weight.  Is this something that usually happens pretty quickly or does it take months and months.  Just curious since I have not seen much of a difference and have been breastfeeding for 8 weeks now. Thinking I just might not be one of the lucky ones that this works for.

Thanks in advance!! :)

Re: Weight loss w/ Breastfeeding question...

  • I EP and I've lost 20 lbs so far.  DD was born 1/6/10.  I still have some more weight to lose though.

  • DD is 10 weeks old and I have been EBF the whole time. I still have about 10 pounds to loose and it has been this way since I left the hospital. I have heard that while breastfeeding your body holds onto a little weight (about 10 lbs) sort of like when pregnant. I am not sure if this is true or not, but I have been exercising a few times a week and eating fairly healthy, but have not lost any weight since leaving the hospital. Like I said I am only about 10 pounds away from pre-pregnancy weight. Maybe if you are that close to your weight goal, maybe it is true that your body holds onto weight while bf.

  • It didn't seem to help me much with my first.  I was still trying to lose those last 5 lbs a year later.  The weight never "melted off," as I had been told it would.  I had to watch what I ate and work out.

This time, the weight is coming off super fast.  I have lost about 25 of the 30 lbs I gained.  Maybe the difference is that DC#1 was never a big eater -- a tiny baby who was 15 lbs at a year.  This time, I am mostly pumping (because DS is having issues with latching/BFing), and I am pumping about 3-4 oz per session, 8 times a day.  So I definitely think I'm producing more BM this time.  I was in my pre-pg jeans at 2 weeks pp.  With DD, that took a couple of months.

  • Elizabeth was born on 12/9. I gained 32lbs and have 10 to go and I am EBF.

  • baby was born 1-6-10 and as of friday at the dr. i was down 11 lbs from my pre-preggo weight.  i eat a lot-every couple hours, and drink tons of water etc.

even last pg when i exclusively pumped i dropped weight pretty quickly.  however, i eventually put some back on!

  • It did not seem to help me much.  :(

  • BFing causes your uterus to contract, causing it to get back into it's shape faster. and you need more calories than a non-BF momma. so BFing isn't a magical diet, it just helps you along. you still will have to work to lose the weight, it just should be a little bit easier.

  • I have 5-7lbs to lose still and my weight loss has been stalled at this for the last month.  I gained around 40lbs so most of it came off really quickly, but now I'm stuck.  I guess it's time to start that whole watch what I eat and exercise business :(

  • I gained 35 pounds in my pregnancy and DD is 13 weeks old today and I still have 5 more pounds to go. But the first 20 melted away in the first 2 weeks. The next 10 I really didn't do anything for it just took 10 weeks.

  • I've been EBF and lost all of my preg weight. It took 5 weeks.  I'm not sure if I've lost more.
  • It doesn't seem to be making a difference with me.  I lost 15 right away, but nothing has happened with the other 10.

  • l lost a lot of weight at first, only 5 lbs over my pre pg weight. But the weight loss stopped and I started to gain.
  • I was down the 33 lbs I gained by 3 weeks pp.

  • I gained 26 pounds and lost 15 during delivery; I haven't weighed myself yet because I am not working out yet but I bf and I think it helps but like a previous poster said it doesn't magically come off.
