Drink caffeine while pregnant?

Ok, I know caffeine is iffy while pregnant...but I have to admit, around 1 pm every day I get an awful headache and if I drink either a cup of coffee or coke I feel better within 20 minutes... I just had a light caramel frappacino (gasp) and feel so much better about life! hehe.It was so delicious.

Am I the only one? Do any of you ladies drink caffeine in moderation while pregnant?

Ease my guilt ;)

Re: Drink caffeine while pregnant?

  • I absolutely did.
  • I have my cup of coffee every morning, if I don't have that I usually have a coke sometime during the day. I cut back on the amount but I have at least one cup of caffeine a day, otherwise I get a headache.

  • Good lawd, yes!

Then again, I had a sm. glass of wine about once a week (after 1st tri), so maybe I'm not the right person to ask!! haha

  • I had at least a coke or an iced tea a day.  My OB was totally cool with it under 300 mg a day.

  • I do, and even though I know it's fine, I have this nagging guilty feeling about it just b/c I abstained from caffeine so much more with DD. This time around, though, I am rarely getting to sttn (b/c of DD) and, yes, I just have a much better day all around if I have a little coffee in the morning. On the days I don't have any caffeine - like yesterday - I am dragggging all day and end up with a nasty headache by the end of the day (which makes me feel guilty in and of itself b/c it just shows how addicted I am!). It's weird how it makes me almost happier, too. I guess caffeine really is a drug. ;-)
  • Diet Coke is the only thing that kept me going through my last pregnancy and I have a feeling it will play a large roll in helping me get through my next pregnancy.
  • Ahh i would have a 32 oz pepsi at least 2-3 times a week
  • Oh thank you ladies--I honestly feel better already! ;) hehe. I too drank caffeine in moderation while pregnant with Lyla. And I completely agree that it helps me through my day! (Perhaps I too have a caffeine addiction!) But I figure, as long as I can limit it to a coke or a coffee a day--or every other--than tiny and I will be better for it~! (And so will my little one who I am home with all day!
  • I had coca cola just about every day because I was so nauseous.  I didn't drink coffee because the thought of it made me gag.  If I didnt have the aversion to it I totally would have had a cup a day.
  • wtf.

  • I didn't drink much caffeine in the first tri, but after that I tried to limit myself to one soda or cup of coffee.

  • I'll admit I was a bit conservative in the 1st & 2nd tri's, but I fell off the wagon in the 3rd and started getting half-caf lattes. I work in retail and my 3rd tri was during Christmas, so it was necessary to keep me from being usless & a raving biotch.

When I eventually get PG again, I can honestly say I will NOT be as cautious as I was the 1st time.

I drank 1-2 cups of coffee every single day.  Except for one week and I ended up in urgent care for a migraine.  I have no idea if it's related but I went back to my coffee after it.

  • I do as well, but have never been a big caffeine drinker, so I don't drink large amounts. At the most 1-2 cups/day, some days none.

  • I had a Pepsi every day when I was pregnant.  That was after I cut back from way more and everyone said it wasn't good but when I cut it out completely I just didn't feel right so I stuck with just one a day
  • up to a certain amnt of caffeine per day is fine.  It's not "iffy".
  • Yes, I too am glad to report my dd does not have three heads either! ;) Fingers crossed this new tiny won't either--didn't look to on the ultrasound photos! (But I am sure with too much caffeine two more heads could develop! )
  • I have a coffee or soda everyday after the first tri.
  • I do, but I cut back a little from pre-pregnancy. You can have a certain amount each day.
  • I had a cup of coffee everyday after first tri. That was only because I had an aversion to it.
  • I drank A LOT of caffeine when pregnant. I had hyperemesis and couldn't keep much food or liquid down. The one thing I could keep down most was a regular old fountain coke. My OB told me to drink whatever I could keep down (with the exception of alcohol).

  • I read some of the studies on caffeine and pregnancy while I was pregnant with my first; from what I remember, I don't think any negative effects were found unless it was linked to quite high levels of consumption.

I remember seeing that 300 mg per day was considered all right -- and that's like 10 cans of Coke or a couple of cups of coffee. So for myself, I keep it under 150 mg just to be very conservative.

I keep tabs on my caffeine intake in that I have a pretty good idea of how much is in what I consume (i.e., about 30-35 mg in a can of soda), but I certainly don't avoid it. I stopped at Starbucks this afternoon. :)

  • I drank caffeine while pregnant w/ DD and I'm still drinking caffeine during this pregnancy.  That being said, I only drink 1 cup of heavily creamed coffee per day or a Diet Pepsi.  Other than that I drink water.
  • I drink a Diet coke a day.  Occasionally 2 if I'm feeling like it.
  • I only changed from a medium coffee to a small coffee everyday while pregnant

  • I sure do.  Before my stomach wouldn't let me have my beloved coffee, I was having 2 cups a day.  Now I try to sip a coke to get the wake up I need.
  • Yes - I have a cup of home-brewed coffee every day.

  • I have a cup of coffee a couple times a week.  I love ice tea too.  I'm not a big drinker of these, but I haven't given it up.  We just got back from Vegas and I enjoyed coffee and a soda at breakfast each day!  Ha, ha!  I say go for it as long as you're not having 12 a day!
  • I let myself have either a coffee in the AM or a soda in the PM while I was pregnant. On a rare occasion I would have both.
  • I had a cup of coffee every morning (down from my usual 3 cups). I would drink a can of Coke a day in the first tri to ease my m/s and occasionally in the 3rd tri if I felt a headache coming on.

  • Heck yes! I have a large mug of home brew pretty much daily, and usually a diet coke every few days on top of it. I'm really not concerned.
