Q about formula

how did you decide which brand to try? Did you wait for the pedi to recommend one to you? did you just use what they had at the hospital? I am going to attempt to BF but have no problems supplementing with formula.. we received several cans of different brands of formula (soy, regular, etc) and I'm not sure what to do with them...

Re: Q about formula

  • Def. start with the regular formula. Most people reserve soy for babies having problems on the regular.

I chose Similac with DS because I had lots of samples and coupons, and I was working for Abbott at the time and qualified for employee discounts. I no longer work there, but we will probably go with Similac again.

  • I used Similac Sensitive.  Most of my friends used Enfamil Gentlease (low lactose) but my son was super gassy on that so we switched to Sensitive (lactose free).  When he was older and could tolerate lactose better, I switched to Earth's Best Organic because I wanted him on an organic formula.

gotcha, that makes sense! I have a reg can of Similac and a soy can of Similac.. and they even send checks... I don't want to stock up yet as who knows what will work for them... but it's good to know!

  • The hospital gave us Similac Advance that we supplemented with. DD was very gassy when she was younger so we switched to Similac Sensitive around 2 months and then the RS version at 4 months. I would hold on to the cans, some babies have no problems switching between formulas. If you want to stock up I would buy gift cards to Target or Walmart and then if BF works for you, the GC can be used torwards diapers instead of formula. I would use whatever the hospital gives you and then switch from there if they need it. I had a friend that delievered 2 weeks after me who's LO couldn't handle Similac anything and had to be switched to Enfamil so you never know.

We went with Similac because that's what they were started on in the NICU and they did fine on it.  We did switch to the Costco brand when they were 4 or 5 months old and they did fine on that too.

  • we went through 4 kinds before settling on Goodstart (the only thing that didnt give them gas). we started with Enfamil because thats what they were given at the hospital, but we had a lot of spit up issues so we tried the AR version, didnt work. we tried the gentelese formula, didnt work for the spit up and they got gas and constipated. tried the generic version, gas, constipation and spit up. goodstart, yea, less spit up and no gas. i wish they had an organic version though. i am afraid to switch them again because this is working so well. i wouldnt stock up on anything until you know what will work for your LOs. i would return everything you got and get diapers until you know which formula will work.
