what should I expect? My OB told me that a c-section is safer for baby B and given the fact that I have a heart condition, it's the way to go.. having said that.. what to expect? I watched one on youtube (BIG mistake!) and am even more nervous... do they do a spinal block or an epidural? how bad does THAT hurt? do they give you anything for anxiety to calm your nerves a bit? any other tips would be greatly appreciated.. I see my OB in a few weeks and am hoping to firm up a date....
TIA
Re: for those who have had a c-section
i had a vaginal birth with my DS1 and a c/s with the twins - and can say that I much preferred the c/s --- the actual delivery part of it AND the recovery were a LOT easier for me. (I had a 4th degree tear from the vaginal birth- was in pain for over 8 weeks- it was horrible... the c/s I felt fine after a few days).
I was given a spinal block- that is usually the way they go unless you are going to attempt vaginal then you'd have an epidural that they'd turn up if you had to go for a c/s. I didn't feel anything - just pressure, as they say --- i didn't even realize they had cut into me already and the babies were about to be born- i thought they were still prepping me!
there was one point when they were putting me back together that I didn't like at all - just too much pressure pushing on my belly - felt yucky (but no pain)... and that was only about 5 minutes max.
ask your doc all your questions- it made me feel a lot better to ask the doc everything and know exactly how it would be done- the type of stitches i'd have (i had internal + steri strip, no staples, but he said he'd use staples if they were short on time b/c it's faster)
just try not to think about it- really- just think about your babies being born- not that you are having surgery- because that is not a fun thing to think about- but having babies is
I was in the recovery room for about 40 minutes -- had some shaking which is normal- but otherwise felt fine. Then i was brought to my room and the boys were brought in (i made it to 38w so no NICU time was needed). I had no problem holding or nursing them with the c/s... the worst pain was getting up - but once i was standing and walking it was fine... just getting up and down sucks- but gets better the more you do it.
I had a c section. It honestly wasn't bad at all. I had to have 2 spinals because the first one didn't numb me fully & they didn't hurt me. I have all the shots I had for IVF made me an expect with getting shots!
The recovery time wasn't too bad either. Yes, it hurt the first few days, but I was up and walking around by day 2.
I never really read up on Csections prior to having one, and for me ignorance was bliss. LOL.
The procedure itself was not bad. I was given a spinal and you feel nothing. A bit of pressure and pulling to extract the babies, but nothing painful...just discomfort.
The recovery however was painful IMO, especially the first week. Oh, and no one warned about the intense gas pains and constipation in the beginning! Your core muscles will be sore and it will be difficult to move around for a while. I was able to walk after 2 days, and drive after 2 weeks w/o any major issues. Be sure to take all your meds as prescribed and on time. Make sure you have a LOT of help in the beginning.
Good luck. Just remember it's all worth for your babies!!
I had a section after dilating to a 9 with Emerson. I had an EPI when I finally got to an 8 because the stupid dr wasn't in any hurry to help me out. So, I got to feel basically what both feel like in the matter of just a few hours.
The section was AWESOME! I had the epi and you could feel some tugging and pushing but, absolutely no pain. The recovery was really great too. You just need to remember to stay on the pain meds around the clock and to get up and walk the halls of the hospital starting the day after your section. Those are the secrets!
ooouch... do they always massage the uterus afterwards??
Yes, quite frequently in the recovery period. They do that to make sure your uterus stays contracted so you don't bleed a lot. They will also still give you pitocin through your IV (sometimes up to 24 hours after) to keep that uterus contracted and bleeding down. It sucks, but it's a good thing.
(FWIW - I've never had a c/s, but work as an RN on an OB floor)
Mine was not bad at all. Check out my Birth Story (fairly long).

Honestly, I was so worried about my spinal and it seriously was no big deal at all! You can read my birth story in my blog. It was a very quick and easy process for me thank goodness! The recovery was the harder part, but it was definitely manageable.
I had a planned c/s for when I was 38 weeks, but my water broke when I was at home at 36w1d, so I wasn't mentally prepared for the c/s. I started having contractions and all I could think about was them stopping, so when they started the spinal, I wasn't worried at all (which surprised me) and once the pain from the contractions stopped, it was the best feeling.
Good luck. I don't know about any nerve medication, sorry.
My section was a breeze. They cut me open at 1042, Molly was out at 1049, Lilly at 1050. I had my tubes tied and was back in recovery no more than 40 minutes after the whole shebang started.
I had some sort of spinal thing- I was wide awake but totally numb from the ribs(ish) down to my toes. The spinal didn't hurt at all. They told me I would feel three bee stings and while I was waiting for them, my legs started feeling warm. I said, "Oh my legs are warm, cool." They said, "It's in, let's go!" And swung my legs up. Wham bam. I was given some syrupy thing to drink just before hand and I threw that up- but a lot of people throw up and I had been puking all the way through so it was no surprise. I was up and walking around the next morning- it hurt like a mo-fo that first time but every time I got up, it got easier. You'll be fine!!
I had a spinal and reacted horribly to either IT or the initial pain killers. I vomited for the first 12 hrs and pretty much was out of it post delivery HOWEVER...
I had a really easy recovery from the actual surgery. I was told not to lift anything for 6 wks but could have easily @ 2wks or so. Don't get me wrong, the incision was tender and it is surgery but if your dr is recommending it, it's probably the best thing for you and the babes.
