Breastfeeding

Do I need a breastpump?

I am only planning on breastfeeding for a few weeks.  I also want to introduce formula at the same time, so the baby will feed from a bottle.  I was wondering if I need to buy or register for a breastpump?  Even a cheap handpump one?  Not sure what to do..help!!

Re: Do I need a breastpump?

  • If you're only breastfeeding for a few weeks, then I'd say no. If you need to pump from the beginning then I would just rent one from the hospital for the time you need it.

  • Ditto pp.. why spend the money on a pump if you know you'll only bf for a few weeks? You can rent one for much cheaper than the cost of a decent pump.

  • Depending on how much it costs to rent a pump from the hospital and how often you plan on pumping would make a difference. Depending on those answers you can decide to rent, buy a cheap hand pump (20-50$) or do neither.
  • The Medela hand pump is inexpensive and works wonders. I would say start out with that.  Even if you dont need to pump and store since u are not going to nurse for long, it will come in handy those first few days when you are dolly parton engorged and need a little relief, trust me.
  • I don't think you will need one.  Because the weaning process should be gradual for your sake- so you don't get engorged- when you are ready to stop nursing- you can just gradually add formula bottles to your daily routine- you don't need to ever feed bottles of breastmilk.  I think it's really nice that you are going to nurse in the beginning even though you don't have long term plans- it's great that you are going to make that effort!
