We had a regular bumper but DH decided that he was to nervous that it was a SIDS risk so we got a breathable bumper. Now I am nervous that when she does he 90 degree turn every night that she is going to hit her head on the crib rail. What did you guys use?
Re: What kind of bumper?
I guess I'm a minority. We use a breathable bumper and have from Day One. I put my face up to it to see if I could breathe through it and it seemed ok. We used a sleep positioner until he was about 3-4 months though. That sort of kept him centered instead of all over the place. He is a BIG mover and he constantly is hitting his head against the rails. I am sure he'd get his arm or leg stuck too. He is now standing up in his crib and he can't really stand on the breathable like he could on a regular bumper. I do have to say when he was just learning to crawl and he was rocking back & forth on this hands & knees he's constantly hit his head on the crib rails in bed. He got bruises, I can only imagine how many more bruises he woudl have had if we didn't have the breathable up.
That being said, I think it's a personally decision and no one can really tell you what to do. You need to do what feels right & safe. I know SIDS is a scary thing and I was hesitant at first to put the breathable bumpers in. We also have a video monitor and at first if I saw that he was lodging himself in the corner I'd go in and move him. Now, he's old enough that I'm not as concerned.
Good luck with your decision. Use your gut instinct. It will be fine either way.
We didn't use one either, but about six months ago (15 months old), I thought about putting it on b/c she was really flopping around.
Like many decisions you will make ... it's what you feel comfortable with. After reading a bunch of articles, it wasn't for me. Plus, our pediatrician recommended not using one. Most of my friends used one, though (the traditional one that comes in the bedding sets) ... so I felt like I was in the minority.
Thanks everyone! I ended up sticking with the breathable one for now.
I am going to try and sell my traditional bumper.
