OMG-horrible rib pain!

I have been sick for over a week now and my ribs were sore from coughing but today I was making some soup and went to throw something away and I felt a kick and a pop against my left rib cage and literally almost fell to the ground, I started crying and screaming it hurt sooo bad. I can barely move now. I can't get comfortable-it hurts to be in any position. I have tried heat, ice and Tylenol but nothing is helping. Is it worth even going to the ER..what can they do for ribs?  I can't have an x-ray so I think I am just stuck dealing with it. It doesn't help that I am still sick and can't cough or blow my nose without crying.  This sucks....any advice???

Re: OMG-horrible rib pain!

  • You can try wrapping your ribcage in a tight ace bandage.  Even if you could have an x-ray and cracked a rib, thats all they would do in the ER - well besides pain meds.

    GL hope it gets better!

  • I'm not even sure they can give you pain meds this late in the game...do you have a nurse on-call that you can check with?  I was just gripping about rib pain a ways down on here.  Must be the weather, although, I'd say yours might be something worse due to the popping noise.
  • I had rib pain that started in my back and eventually was in the same spot in the front.  I tried ice, Tyelnol, heat, massage, chiropractic, wrapping with an Ace bandage, whirlpool baths - EVERYTHING!!! I eventually got referred to a pain management specialist and he put me on Vicodin.  I was a little shocked when that's what the dr suggested, but he told me that anti-inflammatories would affect the blood flow, and steroids would affect the growth of the baby.  I was at my wits end but felt better after talking with him about it.  I was worried my baby would be addicted, but he explained that as long as you take what's prescribed and only when you absolutely need to, when you quit taking it so does the baby, and if you aren't addicted your baby won't be either.  In the end it is better to get some relief because the stress of you being in constant unbearable pain puts stress on the baby too.  I'm definitely not saying it's for every ache and pain out there, but it wouldn't have been good for the baby to go the rest of my pregnancy in such agony.  I'm not sure if the rib head finally went back into place or what - but I haven't had to take any for a couple of weeks now.  Definitely talk to your doctor if you are having so much constant pain you feel like you need to go to the ER.  This comes from a mama that went natural with her first child, just so you don't think I'm just a wuss! Hope you get some relief soon - I feel for ya - trust me!
