How much maternity leave do you get?

I started a new job back in June and found out they do not offer paid ML.  So, I have to go on short term disability which I get 10 weeks regular birth or 12 weeks for c-section.  Then I can use any of my vacation time that I have been hoarding since it has to be use my 9/30

Re: How much maternity leave do you get?

  • i work for a family business so i am really unsure of what my maternity leave is going to look like and what portion of it will be paid. realistically i know i will have to keep up with some of my responsibilities from home as soon as i am settled in but am hoping to stay home for 3 months and then start back 3 days a week instead of full time.

  • With my STD and my vacation days I hope to be home for at least 3 1/2 months, then I am going to ask my boss if i could work from home for 1-2 days a week going forward.  That way I can do some house stuff on my my lunch break, or leave to pick up the baby earlier from daycare on those days since I won't be commuting.

  • We get 12 weeks and can come back part-time for another 12 weeks.  My last company I worked with we negotiated a new maternity leave policy.  The policy was crap and many of the girls were pregnant so it worked in our favor.  We negotiated 12 weeks off fully paid and then 1 month unpaid if you chose to do so.

  • anywhere from 12 - 24 weeks depending on the circumstance (length doc says I'm disabled, vaginal or c/s, etc...) + any benefit time I've accumulated.
  • I had a total of 20 weeks.  10 of that was paid in full and 6 weeks partial pay with the new NJ deal... so only 4 weeks were unpaid but with job protection.

  • I got:

    NJFMLA:

    4 week sbefore

    8 weeks after (c-sectoin)

    NJFLI:

    6 weeks paid

6 more off with job protection no pay!

  • we get 2 weeks prior to due date and then 12 weeks after. We can also tack on any vacation time that we have saved up.
**the new version of the nest ate my pictures and I can't get them back again***
  • i called the state Labor Dept this week to clarify b/c my work was only saying I got 4 wks before and 6 weeks after, paid (we have a "private plan," but companies that don't are under the state plan).

espec if you're at a company w/50+ employees, you should get an ADDITIONAL 6 weeks under the new state LEAVE act -- paid (signed into law this summer;  some HR folks do not know the rules)... but a PP suggested we get another 6 weeks unpaid (if you want to take it)... i believe that's when the federal "you can take leave for 12 weeks w/job security intact" rules go into place, no???

sadly, there's no "definitive" source online or in print that I've found, and it's confusing to say the least.

I am under the assumption that i will be getting, like the PP:

    -->

    NJFMLA:

    4 weeks before PAID

    6  weeks after (8 if it's a c-section)  PAID

    NJFL:

    6 weeks paid

6 more off with job protection no pay

has anyone been told DIFFERENTLY by their employer and then QUESTIONED and gotten more??

It's a touchy subject to bring it up too soon, but....I probably will in 2-3 weeks.

(and under NJ state law, don't forget you're entitled to PAID leave if you're unemployed, for pregnancy, too)

  • I live in NJ and work in NY, so unfortunately I don't think I qualify for the 4 weeks before deal. I get 2 weeks before, 12 weeks after my delivery date, and then can use any vacation time.
  • the additional  extended family  leave  act  only applies if you  have  been  employed by your  employer for  over 12 months. ( in addition to them  employing 50+  people.)

I don't  qualify  for it so  i'm  left  with std-  4  weeks  prior and  6/8 weeks  after  depending on vag or  c-section. adding on  some  vacation  days but  don't want to  consume  it all up so  I  can  still take  a week off here and  there to  spend  with LO  as   they  grow.

I asked  my  ob if they would  get  me out of  work  earlier,  perhaps  on  long term disability- but they  said  that the  state  asks  tons of  questions  and  I  really need to  be on  bedrest or what not.
