How to determine if I'm leaking amniotic fluid

All day today i've had some increased discharge, and it smells vaguely like amonia, and it's pretty clear and somewhat shiny and slimy.  I've changed my underwear twice today and it just keeps coming.  Is this amniotic fluid?  Should I call the doc?

Re: How to determine if I'm leaking amniotic fluid

  • To be on the safe side, I'd call the dr. They have to look at it under a microscope to be sure. They will probably send you to L&D.
  • Loading the player...
  • There is a test they can do in L&D to confirm if it is amniotic fluid or not - that is the only definite way to know. If it has been going on all day and you have had to change twice then I would call the dr.

  • While it's probably just discharge, I would call your OB. The only way to know for sure is to have it tested.
  • I was really hoping you all would tell me it's nothing, I've been in L&D every day this week...Well I guess I'll go call.

  • I thought amniotic fluid didn't have that amonia smell, so I'd say it's probably just an increase discharge/pee... But I am no doctor
  • i know im a little late here.... i had the same problem right before christmas when i was around the same stage youre in.  i went to the ER labor and delivery and it was just extra discharge apparently...

i asked my OB that next week how i could know and she said....

1- change undies and put on a pad if you have any

2- lay down for 30+ minutes very still

3- stand up normally and go to the bathroom and check out the pad

4- if the pad is extremely wet or you feel a gush when you stand up your water is broken, if neither of these but it is a little wet repeat steps 1-3 at least 2 more times and see if it gets better or worse.

    HTH.... good luck!! :D

  • I did call the on call midwife and she said some of the similar things that the pp above me said.  Lay down for 30 minutes, check for a gush when you get up, drink lots of fluids.

The discharge has virtually stopped now, so i'm less worried, but i'll keep an eye on it.  I have an appt. with the OB tuesday so I'll ask about it then too.

  • Yeeeah if it smelled like ammonia, I'd assume it's urine, because, well, urine kinda smells like ammonia.
