big babies (9+ lbs at birth) - a question

DS was 9 lbs 9 ozs and 22 inches at birth a week early. At one month, he was 12 lbs 3 ozs and 24 inches.  I had GD, but it was controlled with a VERY strict diet and insulin 3x a day.  I'm not convinced that DS was big due to the GD though since DH and I are both tall people - I'm 5'10 and DH is 6'3.

If you had a big baby, were you GD?  Are you and DH tall/big people?  Are you wondering where your big child came from?

Just curious . . .

  • Two of my three were over 9....Dd was 9 lbs 14 oz and Ds was 11 lbs.  No GD, I'm 5'9, their dad is 5'11".  I was 10 lbs 2 oz at birth, my sis was 10lbs 10 oz...and my mom is only 5 feet!

  • You have no idea how curious I am about this with my DS. Pre pg I was 110lbs and am 5'1". DH is over 6ft and 190lb. DS was 9lbs 7oz at birth and is now 17lbs. I did not have GD at all, not even a hint of it. All of the men on both sides are tall but I was the chunky baby not DH. The emergency pedi we saw the other day for DS's reflux (yes chunkers have reflux too) thinks I'm over feeding him which I don't get cause he is EBF. I'm terribly confused as well.
  • DS was 9lb and 21in, at 40w exactly. I did not have GD; I am 5'5", and DH is 5'9". He was just big, and has been consistently at the top of the % charts since then.

  • DS #1 was 8lbs, 6oz, 10 days early (not 9+ lbs, but I'm tiny - so huge baby for me)! I had GD, but my numbers were always very low. I don't think he was big due to GD. He was normal to small compared to my nieces and nephews on DH's side.

He was really big throughout the first year, then he started to slowly fall into the average percentiles once he was really mobile (right around 1 year).

  • Our baby girl weighed 9 lbs. 2 oz.....no GD....I am 5'11 and hubby is almost 6'3....I was induced at 39 weeks because Dr didn't want me to get much bigger.
  • no GD, DD was 9lbs 6oz. on her due date

    DH is 5'11'', I am 5'7''

I was 8lbs 15lbs at birth, DH was less than 7 pounds

she has been the biggest baby on both sides of our family for three generations back (that's as far back as we can go)

  • My DS was 9 lbs. 9 oz.  21 inches.  I did not have GD.  I am 5'6" and I was 7 lbs. 8 oz. at birth.  DH is 6'1" and was also 7lbs. 8oz. when he was born.  I am at a lost as to how my child got so big.  I'm scared to have a 2nd one.... who knows how big that LO will be.
  • LO was 9lbs 12 oz at birth. DH and I are both 5'7 and not big people. I was not GD. However I myself was 9 lbs 3 oz my brother was 9lbs and my cousin was 11lbs. So we are known for big babies.

  • No GD and my second DS was 11 pounds, 10 ounces at 38 weeks, 5 days (scheduled c-section due to previous section). I had severe pre-e and HELLP Syndrome with my first son and he was born 5 weeks early. Even at 5 weeks early, however, he weighed 7 pounds.

Everyone always assumes I had GD because I am obese. My sugar numbers were always great, however, well within normal range. I was a big baby (9 pounds), my half brother and sister were both in the 10 pound range. My younger sister was 8 lbs, 14 oz. Dad and Uncle were in the 10 pound range as well. I am 5'8" and DH is 6'4".

I guess I know where my DS got his size, but I sure as hell didn't expect him to be close to 12 pounds.  Jeebus.  My MFM said after he delivered him that he looked like he was ready for kindergarten.

  • DS was 9 lbs 2 oz at birth.  DH is 6'3" and I am 5'9", we were both 7 lbs 6 oz at birth; my dad is 6'4" and my bro is 6'2".  My paternal grandmother had 7 kids, smallest was 8 lbs, largest was 11 lbs 3 oz, so I'm guessing it came from that side!

    EDIT:  And no GD here.

  • DS was 9 lbs 6 oz and 21.5 inches, and I am not a big person, nor did I have GD. DH is average as well. I was a big baby too though (9lbs 14 oz), so I just figured it ran in my genes or something!
  • Not GD. She was 9 lbs. even and is 13 now. I'm 5'7" and DH is 6'. I was a big baby, too...8 lbs. 12 oz. DH was in the 7 lb. range.
  • No GD... Just huge babies in my family!! DS Was 9 5 at birth and 12 7 at five weeks... GEEZZZ .. Sooooo big... DH and I are both tall people so I guess thats where it comes from!

  • No GD.

DD was 9lb 9 oz. DH and I were both 9lbs at birth so we were expecting a 9lb'er, although she was even bigger than expected.

  • My LO was 9 lbs, 8 oz and 21 inches long. I did not have GD. DH is 6'4 and I am 5'9...so we are tall people too.  DH and I were average size babies when we were born, each 7 lbs.  We were very surprised to learn that LO was 9 lbs when he was born.  He is now 2 months old and he is 13 lbs, 12 oz and 24 inches long.
  • My son was 10lbs at birth. I did not have GD. I gained 30lbs during pregnancy and my dr thought my son would be small. My DH is 6'6, i'm 5'9. My grandmother and mother had all big babies without gaining a lot of weight during pregnancy and everyone in my family is really tall so I definitely think you can have bigger babies from being taller.

  • My DD was 9lbs 4oz with no GD during pregnancy.  I did gain a lot of weight though.  I am 5'6" and DH is 5'11" and both of us were 8lbs at birth.  Even the ultrasound tech guesstimated 7lbs 10oz at 40 week ultrasound.  She was born 3 days later.

  • DS was 9lbs 3oz at birth and weighed in at 14lbs 2oz on Tuesday for his 2 month appt. I did not have GD. Both DH and I are not that exceptionally tall. I'm 5'6 and DH is 5'9. I have no idea where my DS got his size from.

  • No GD here.  Neither DH or I are overweight, but I'm not petite either.  I'm 5'10" am well within my weight for my height.

My big baby (10lb 6oz) came from me though.  I was 9+ at birth and my mom is a petite woman, but my dad was 6'3" tall.  I also have 2 cousins on my mom's side who were born over 10lbs.  So big babies run in the family.

  • I did not have GD, and my son was 9lb 2oz, 22 in long.  I am not quite 5'5", DH is 5'10".  I weighed 8 lb 4oz at birth, and my DH was less than 6.  I gained a LOT of weight, though.

  • No GD, my DS was 9lbs, 4oz. I'm small 5'4" but DH is 6'2". I was a 9lbs+ baby so I think thats were his birth rate comes from. DS is growing like a weed though! It will be weird when he reaches my height and beyond!
  • When they pulled him out f me the nurses asked if I had GD. Um, no. Bbaies are born big in my family, DS is actually smaller than my brother was.

I have tall people in my family, I am 5'9, my bro is 6'1.

    DH is 5'8" 1/2, lol.
