How long does it take you to get out of the house?

If it's under an hour (for both/all of you to get ready from soup to nuts), I'd LOVE to hear your tips/routine!! I need to start getting better at this so that #2 can fall into the routine as well and I'm not dreading going out with the two.

Re: How long does it take you to get out of the house?

  • I usually don't attempt to go anywhere BEFORE their morning nap (from 10-12). So while they sleep, I shower and pack a diaper bag. The moment they wake up, I give them a sippy of milk, dress them and we're out the door. So usually about 20 minutes.

  • ITA agree with not going anywhere until after their morning nap.  If I wanted to time it, I would say 10 minutes tops? Half of that is getting shoes and jackets on.

Before she gets up, I get her milk in her sippy and her snacks in my purse.  Diaper bag is always pre-packed in the car for "just in case" stuff.

  • If I shower and blow dry while DH is here it's an hour.  He doesn't do anything with DS but watch him.  Without DH it's maybe an 1 hr 15 because I usually have to take blow dry breaks to do something with the kid.

I don't have any real tips except setting clothes out.  On my own I can be ready in 30 minutes.

if so, here you go. but keep in mind that i shower at night. i highly recommend this, and it saves a ton of time in the morning. plus, i feel all clean and fresh when i slip between the sheets, which is a feeling i LOVE.

i also recommend packing the diaper bag the night before. that way you can just grab it as you go out the door.

if i'm lucky enough for little g to sleep until 6:30 (it has happened twice or three times), this is how it goes:

6:15-6:30 - i wash my face, brush teeth, do makeup/hair
6:30-6:45 - bring g downstairs for a cup of milk and breakfast bar
6:45-7 - bring g upstairs to dress both of us
7-7:15 - back downstairs - g watches tv/plays while i get my coffee travel mug, start my car to warm it up, pack a lunch for work, etc.
    7:20 - get on coats & hats
7:25 - out to the car!

but he's usually up earlier, so i will have plenty of time to linger and even watch sesame street with little g before getting us ready.

Wow, thank you for the specifics! It really helps :)  I also think I should start showering at night......I know I won't wake up before she does to do so and MH leaves for work very soon after she wakes so no time to shower while he's here. That means I usually wait for her nap, which is at noon.

  • I found out I can get out in 35 minutes if the pressure is on. But most days at least an hour.

I am a trained professional though ;)  I have been doing the kids and getting out of the house thing for a long time. You should see everything it takes to get three kids out the door. When it is all five of us we have done an hour before but 1 1/2 hours is more realistic.

  • The diaper bag is always fully stocked, so  for getting that ready the most I have to do is throw a sippy and some cheerios or baby food in it. I just have everything done the night before so all I have to do when DS wakes up is get him dressed and feed him a quick snack.

  • I assume this is for SAHM?

I'm a working mom, but it takes me about an hour in the morning to get myself and my son out the door.  This includes getting him to eat breakfast.

The diaper bag is never really my problem as we don't use it much, hence it really doesn't deplete. I find where I get hung up is getting ME ready I think. I should put my own clothes out at night (lol). Actually what I REALLY need to do is get caught up on folding laundry so digging thru the hampers of clean stuff isn't a deterrent to finding annoying things like socks for each of us!!

Aw......see, this post is helping me diagnose what I thought was laziness! It's really not that, it's just a general 'ugh' feeling about finding/doing all the nitpicky things.

Oh, and I also find doing DD's hair is a bit of one of those 'ugh' situations. Doesn't really take long but I just wish I could find a no fuss way to make it look kept so we can just GO, already!!! :)

HTH! yeah - showering at night is great, IMO. it feels good to wash the day away and get into cozy pajamas to wind down for the evening. i usually shower soon after g is in bed - around 8ish. good luck!

  • It is about an hour.

I get up around 6:10, shower, blow dry my hair, and get dressed.  DS wakes up around 6:30 - 6:40.  I put him in his high chair with Handy Manny on the TV and his breakfast (bananas and cereal). Then I get the bags together (I have his lunch already made from the night before if possible).  I make myself breakfast (a shake), about this time DH is out of the shower and dressed. He has breakfast while I get DS dressed and in a fresh diaper.  We are out the door between 7:15 and 7:25.  DH and I go home for lunch, so we don't have to pack food for ourselves, but I do have snacks on hand to throw into a grocery bag in case we need them (yogurt, nuts, crackers, etc).

  • It usually takes me less than 40 minutes to get us out the door in the morning.  I agree that showering and pulling together everything you need (lunch, etc.) the night before is key. I also pull together all of DS's clothes for the week and all of my clothes for the week over the weekend.  That way, I don't need to think about what we're going to wear in the mornings (or evenings during the week either). I get up, get myself together and then wake DS up, get him together and we're out the door.

ETA: I eat breakfast (oatmeal usually) at my desk when I get to work and DS eats breakfast at school, so that does save us some time.

This sounds like another great idea! I may do this today since I have to fold all that laundry anyway. How do you store these outfits though? I'm thinking we could get one of those clear pocket over-the-door organizers even to stuff the outfits in there? I used to put out her stuff (only one outfit at a time though) when she was smaller and we always changed her on the changing dresser (so we wouldn't have to step away). We just change her wherever now but I'd love to get back into it because it does cut down the time.

  • It's right about an hour for us, including breakfast, shower, getting dressed, etc..  I think I'll probably never leave my house again when #2 comes. :)

I have a  decorative basket on a dresser in DS's room.  It's long and wide enough to fit his clothes at this age.  I layer his clothes on top of each other, starting with pants and shirt and socks for Friday on the bottom, then pants, shirt and socks for Thursday on top of that, etc.  Each morning the outfit is waiting at the top, so I just grab it.  As for me, I select the clothes I'm going to wear and hang them in the closet (ironed or dry cleaned and ready to go) in the order that I plan to wear them for the week. Each morning I just grab the outfit that's at the front.  If you don't have a basket, you could do the same for your DC, but the basket thing works best for DS.
