grocery shopping- how??

I just got back from a grocery run with DS and I'm trying to figure out how I will make it work with 2. Who goes where?? I don't think I ever see a mom in the store with 2+ little ones.

Re: grocery shopping- how??

  • You go with DH, have DH stay home with both or have DH stay home with one and you take the other : )

    This is my plan!

  • Loading the player...
  • i will avoid grocery shopping w/ both of them as much as i can, but assume DD will go in the seat part of the cart (near me w/ legs hanging out) and #2 will be in his/her infant seat IN the cart.  obviously, not a lot of room for food - ha!
  • Exactly what the pp'er said.
We either all go, or one of us goes by ourself or one of us goes and takes 1 kid.
  • I am not snarking but I really don't see the big deal. I go with the girls 3-4 days a week. Julia sits up front and C walks or rides in the cart. When J was small I would wear her and C would go upfront. If I waited for DH to go with me we would have nothing, it also seems to be poor use of both our time since one of us can handle it. I like to get it done after work with the girls so we can spend our weekend time doing fun stuff.

I make sure they are dry and fed before we leave. If not I get them a snack at the store. On the way from school they have a snack in the car and they get changed before we leave. I have C do the scanning for me and she puts stuff in the bags. Julia just talks to stuff and points to stuff. It is quite fun and they are involved and learning something. I tell C to get me whatever she can reach that is on our list and she can now scan it and toss it into the bags in the cart.

  • Ditto JARbaby, it's not that big of a deal.  I am a SAHM so getting out of the house with both of them every day (unless it is ridiculously cold or snowy) is a necessity.  It seems daunting at first but once you do it, you get the confidence to go almost anywhere

I park near a cart return and grab a cart. DS goes in the cart and I wear DD in a Babyhawk carrier (just got this and I love it!).  I make sure I get all the absolute necessities first, just in case someone starts to melt down so we can make a quick exit (this has never happened yet, knock on wood).  I make sure I have snacks and a sippy for DS and a paci for DD.

    You can do it!

  • Wear one and put the other one in the cart seat. I see moms out with two all the time. Once they're bigger you can get one of those giant carts that have two seats up top or one of the even bigger ones that has a toy car attached and two seats down there. Sometimes they even have carts that have the toy car up front and a seat in the cart as well - that could work better for one toddler and one infant who can sit up/doesn't use an infant seat anymore.
  • Wear the baby and put the toddler in the cart.

Or... go by yourself after DH is home from work.

Our IF journey: 1 m/c, 1 IVF with only 3 eggs retrieved yielding Dylan and a lost twin, 1 shocker unmedicated BFP resulting in Jace, 3 more unmedicated pregnancies ending in more losses.
Total score: 6 pregnancies, 5 losses, 2 amazing blessings that I'm thankful for every single day.

This.  The tricky part is getting my 2 yo to behave, but that's true whether one or two.  I bring a binky and snacks/bribes, and let her 'help' wherever possible.

  • we use the cart with the bench now that DD2 sits up...when she didn't my older dd sat in the seat and my little one was in the big part in her carrier...needles to say we couldn't fit much...
  • When DS was small, I'd wear him or put the infant carrier in the basket of the cart and put DD in the seat.  I would get a basket and put it on the bottom rack of the cart to put my groceries in.

Now I pretty much always wear DS and put DD in the seat of the cart.  I go when they're both dry, fed, and aren't too close to naptime or bedtime.  DD enjoys the grocery store.

  • Will you have a double stroller? ?It took a little practice, but I'm a pro at maneuvering the stroller and the cart. ?I've also started shopping once a week instead of once every two weeks so I'm picking up less (can sometimes get away with those little half carts - but not always), and spending less time in there in case one of them starts to melt down.

WORST case scenario, if they start to lose it, you leave. ?I've never had to, but I'm prepared. :) ?GL!?

  • Grocery shopping really was one of my big fears before DS was born. And it's just not a big deal at all. Really. We go once a week and I even plan my schedule to do it while DD is home rather than when she's at mother's day out.

Actually, you'll be suprised. You can hold quite a bit of food shoved in the cart around the infant seat... even a turkey and all the fixings for a holiday dinner.

If DS is asleep I take him in the carseat, if he's awake he goes in the sling.

I also drive a bit farther to go to the grocery store that hands out balloons and has carts shaped like cars which makes it a fun trip for DD.

  • I plan on either using a delivery service or only taking one while DH takes the other.

  • It's actually not that bad once you do it the first time!

    I either:

    1. DS1 in cart and DS2 in the ergo/bjorn

    2. leave one/both with my mom or DH.

    3. DS1 in seat of cart, DS2 in carseat into the basket (you can usually put a hand basket under the cart!).

I haven't let DS1 walk in the store yet because I know once we do it the first time, he will never let me put him in the cart again.

It takes a lot of time, but it really isn't bad.  DS2 is starting to get too heavy to carry, so I will put him in the seat and let DS1 sit in the basket of the cart (then put a handbasket under the cart).

  • I know I'll feel super intimidated at first but I hate that feeling so I'll likely just brave it one day when they both seem in a great mood lol :) Although it would be nice to only do it with DH's help, that would really limit the times it could get done (he works 9-7p every day). More importantly, I need them to be used to things like that. I'm going to NEED to go one day and if I've been walking on eggshells about it then they might not do so well. I know you aren't saying you don't want to do it but those are my thoughts.

My plan is while the baby is little I will try to wear him in the Ergo (hope he's a wearable baby!! DD wasn't!!). If he hates that then he'll go into the basket of the cart in his Snugride and DD will sit up front like she always does and I'll just get the most important stuff. DD will be 2 when he's born so there is a small chance she'll be okay with walking next to me but I'm not holding my breath on that one just yet.

By the time DS is old enough to be out of the snugride I'd like him to be riding in the front......but DD will be almost 3 by then so I'm assuming she can handle walking like a big girl at that point.

As far as fussing goes, I'm sooooooooo used to it from DD (kinda high maintenance) that I doubt it'll affect me too much as far as getting scared and wanting to leave (unless it's terrible).

  • we go all the time and alone since it's on our way home.  When it was warm out I just put DS in my front carrier and DD sat in the cart.  Now that it is cold out DS stays in his infant seat and I put it in the cart basket...DD still sits in the cart.  Yesterday I had too much stuff (I picked up my site to store comfortor order) and I turned DSs carseat sideways and it actually fit nicely that way and I had tons of room to fill my cart.  I also use the bottom rack for heavy things.

  • DH works too much/too late for me to go alone.  My plan is to wear #2 and have DS in the cart.

  • not sure where you shop - but i see moms with 2+ all the time!

I grocery shop with all 3 of my kids all the time.  I usually get one of the carts that has the truck/car up front and put Griffin up there - and the twins both go into the top seat together.

Timing is most important- making sure it's a good time of day that they will all remain happy - for us it's after the 10am bottle and snack time.

To me the hardest part is just getting them all into and out of the car --- the shopping is easy.

  • It's already been said but yeah, it's not really that hard at all... one kid in the cart, one in a carrier... even with one of my 25lb twins in my carrier it's still not hard to maneuver the store... you just need to get used to it.

In the beginning I just approached every trip with an "if they meltdown I'll leave" attitude and actually they hardly ever do.  You'd be surprised how much you can get done with two kids

    Ditto all of this.

  • My mom used to tote around 2 carts.  I walked next to the cart, holding on, my sister in the seat and my brother in the carrier in the basket part.  The groceries went in the other cart she drug behind her.
