Ferber- middle of the night?

I understand the ferber method for putting LO's down for bed, but does the same rules apply when they wake up in the middle of the night? A's always gone down to bed really easily, it's the 2-3-4 times a night that he's up. Do you still do the increments in the middle of the night? Should you go in first and then start the increments?

Re: Ferber- middle of the night?

  • Yes, you still do the intervals at night. Feber and most similar methods recomend waiting at least a few minutes before you go in for the first time. We did sleep training over Christmas and DD still occasionally wakes during the night but she always puts herself back to sleep before we go in for the first checkin at 5 minutes.

That being said, we know her cries pretty well, so if it is a really distressed cry, like she has her leg stuck through the slats of the crib, we went in right away. However, since we got breathable bumpers that has stopped happening :-)

The idea is that you give them a chance to put themselves to sleep before you go in.

  • Yes, I highly recommend reading his book, Solve Your Child's Sleep Problems before instituting the method.  He gives you instructions for nap time, bed time and middle of the night wakings.  we started Ferber Tuesday night.  Tuesday night was horrible, she cried for a lot of the night.  wednesday night she went down at 7:15, cried for 15 minutes and STTN for the first time in her short little life.  Last night she went down at 6:45, no crying at all.  She woke at 1:00 for a bottle, ate and went right back down.  She then did not wake again until 5:15.  This is a HUGE accomplishment for a child that used to wake almost every hour after the clock struck 1am. • Yes, repeat the process for nap time and night time wakings. I know it's tough but it works as you can see from your experience. What kept me going was thinking about the fact that the amount of crying DS did during this process would be nothing compared to the amount of crying he would do throughout childhood if he couldn't soothe himself to sleep. He is such a good boy now and sleeps like a champ. Keep it up, you are giving your baby the gift of independent sleep!
