Question about Water Breaking...

What does it feel like? Im just curious because of course, any day now, my lil man will come. I mean I know I can have contractions before that even happens but I just want to know do you feel it coming before it happens? Does it feel like you have to pee? Or does it just flow out w/o notice? Let me know moms : ) TIA!

Re: Question about Water Breaking...

  • For me there was no notice...I rolled out of bed and stood up and it just gushed out. Did not feel like peeing either - it was completely different, I knew instantly it was my water breaking. It was my first sign of labor so no contractions before it happened...some people have more of a constant trickle but mine was a one time gush with very little after that.

  • Mine just started to trickle out.  I didn't feel anything but wet.  Some women say they hear a pop, but I never did.

  • I was interested to know this too...so if it "trickles" out, can you tell the difference between it and regular discharge? About how much comes out?
  • My mom told me that if you try to stop it, like you would mid-pee, it just keeps coming.  I don't know how to tell if it trickles out...

  • I had no warning signs- no contractions or anythign like that. I laid  back in bed and it was like the flood gates opened. You will know when it happens. It is the thing in the world.
  • For me, it felt like I was "leaking." It didn't all come out in a big gush... I just leaked for hours and hours during my labor.

I wondered for a long time during my pregnancy if I would know it when my water broke. Let me tell you, there was no mistaking it!

This is what I've heard as well. Squeeze as if you would mid-pee and if it doesn't stop it's your water.

This is what I experienced, too.  Although I tried to convince myself it was pee since I WAS getting out of bed to pee. .. . but it was definitely my water breaking.  :P

  • Mine came out in small gushes, so to speak.  Like some of the others, I had no warning.  At first I half thought that the lovely squirt of urine that comes with a sneeze or cough had escalated into coming with me just merely standing there, but I knew in the back of my mind that it probably was my water breaking.
  • My first felt contrax was at 39wks at 8am. I got up to start timing them in the other room and thankfully had the forethought to bring a WeeWee Pad (lol) for my computer chair. At 8:30am my water broke.

It felt like I was peeing myself but a pee for which I didn't have to contract any muscles if that makes sense. And it wasn't a TON like a normal urination would entail.....more like a heavy trickle. No pops or pain or anything like that for me.......just trickle.

It kept doing that until I had her at 2pm that day.

  • It seems like there's a pattern from what I've read on this board...like it tends to happen at night when you get out of bed or something!

  • When mine was trickling out it was hard to tell if it was urine or amniotic fluid.  I was sure after happened a couple of times that it was amniotic fluid, but on call OB at L&D said it was inconclusive.  I ended up going into labor the next evening.  When they did an u/s upon admission, they discovered a high water break which is why it was only trckles and small gushes.

  • I was laying in bed with DH at about 11pm and started having very mild contractions (my first ones). About 5 minutes later, I felt and heard a pop, and there was a very small gush. I think dd was so low that not much was able to come out. I continued to lose fluid as my contractions got more strong about 6 hours later at the hospital...
  •  I was mid-contraction when I felt the baby move/shift/drop and then the gush of water.  I was standing hunched over the bed.  It did trickle the entire way to the hospital.  I was shocked - but relieved b/c that was THE sign that our baby would be in our arms shortly.

  • Mine felt like pee. It came out a tiny bit at first and I cleaned up and went back to bed. I stood up about 20 minutes later and again trickle, but this time soaked my pants. Same thing when I had my DS#1
