Two Under 2

Embarrassingly stupid logistics question...

When you go out with your infant and your toddler...

How do you load them up in the car at your house?  Who gets loaded up first?  When was your toddler able to climb up into the car themselves?  When you get home... let's say you have a ton of groceries... how do you unload?

I'm thinking that next week will be my first outing with the two together, and I'm nervous.

LOL, I feel like such an amateur.

Re: Embarrassingly stupid logistics question...

  • At the moment I always just unload the groceries while DS is in his carseat. If he's asleep, great, if not I just leave the door/window/trunk (we have an SUV so on that vehicle I can just leave the trunk open) open and go in and out of the house while he sits there. I am maybe out of his sight for two seconds and I don't feel unsafe - no one could get him out of his seat and out of sight of our house within that time frame.

I figure I'll do the same when DD arrives. And for loading them up I figure I'll put her in her carseat inside, carry it out and have DS either hold my hand to come down the steps from the porch, or stay on the porch if its bad weather, snap the baby in and then load DS in. He's pretty good about standing by me and holding my leg if I have to put bags in before I put him in so I figure that will work ok.

  • Loading the player...
  • It depends on who is screaming louder!!!

I usually just take out DS2 and thenDS1. DS1 is not contained, so he will not wait well in the parking lot, or house unattended while I get the other!

  • I put my toddler in the car and then go back in the house to get DD.  DS can climb up in my car but it's a far climb and I don't want him to fall out.

When I get home I take DS out and he "helps" me carry stuff in the house and then when I'm done I get DD out. But I park in my garage so it's not like I have a long way to go or she's in a parking lot.

It's hard to take 2u2 out since most shopping carts aren't made for 2 kids.  But you will learn your own tricks and what works best the more you take them out.  Today was my first trip to the  local grocery store alone with them and it was a lot easier than I thought it would be.  I always go to Target because their carts are easier for me.  Getting the kids in and out of the car at the store is always the hardest part for me.

  • I put DD in the car first since she's most mobile, and DS in second.  When we get to the store, I take DS out first, get him settled in his sling or mei tai, then get DD out.

When we get home, I unload the groceries while they're both in their carseats, then I take DS into the house, then DD.  I drive an SUV and DD can't climb in and out by herself.

  • Don't know if it's "legal"  for me to post here since my two are now over two but they were two at the same time so... you load like this; You can take them both out with you. Put snugride down and strap in toddler. Carry snugride over to the other side and click in.

To unload, take out infant, then set carrier down next to you while you get toddler out.

Groceries in cart? So what, put the kids in first using the same load sequence. At home, get the kids in the house, you can leave the infant in his seat- and unload the groceries.

Ditto- except I have to carry one infant in my arms and one in the car seat while i walk next to my toddler who walks out on his own and climbs into the car on his own....

I then put the infant seat down and put baby in my arms (Gibson) into his car seat.... buckle Grififn into his... then snap Gray into the infant base.

Gray is about to outgrow the infant seat --- when that happens I will have a PNP right next to the door and one twin will go in there while I walk out with other twin and toddler... and i will go back to get twin #2 after the other 2 are buckled in.

  • Thanks, ladies!

(And thanks for not laughing *too* heartily at my expenseStick out tongue)

  • I put one kid in a pack on my back...one in a stroller and hold the third child's hand....when they all three want to walk...I pretend I am herding sheep....just keep pushing one after the other forward.
  • My toddler goes in the car first. I get it started and once it's warmed up I put her in. Then I go get the little one who is already waiting in her carseat and snap her in.

The toddler is able to climb in and out but I don't want her too.

When we unload, it depends. I don't have a preference, usually the infant comes out first because the carseat is behind me and I get her "on my way" into the house then I get the toddler. I'll leave the baby on the playmat, the toddler roams around and I get the groceries.

DOn't worry, you'll do just fine! You will find your own way that works best

  • I feel so inadequate...hats off to you ladies.? I can only see me using htis advice in the event of emergency...otherwise, I am not taking them out by myself! LOL
  • As of right now I load our diaper bag and purse up first. Then I load DS. He can't climb in his seat by himself yet. Than I get DD and load her up. If I have groceries I take the baby out first and put her in the house. Then DS "helps" me take the groceries in.
