Looks like there's a good chance that I'll have to travel about 8 hours by car soon, possibly by myself, with a newborn and a 19 month old.
My dad might be able to travel with me which would be a huge help but DH can't get off work so I know he won't be able to go.... that also means both kids get to go with me since I SAH and there won't be anybody available to keep DS while I'm away.
I have a DVD player in the car and I know that will help while we're actually going but what to do about bathroom breaks and diaper changes. I plan to utilize the front carrier and umbrella stroller as much as possible but JD is in a phase where hates his stroller and will not stay with me if I'm not holding on tightly to his hand!
Re: Travelling (by car) with NB and toddler...advice/tips needed!
Wow, that's hard. I would probably use a double stroller to keep the kids with me if I had to go to the restroom. You obviously can't leave them in the car or carry both and use the restroom yourself. I routinely do diaper changes in the car, either on a seat while I'm standing outside the car or I open the hatch and use that as my changing table.
Good luck! I don't have a double stroller yet but I am thinking more that I might need one, since I do a lot of solo parent traveling, too.
Do you know people along the route that you can plan to stop and visit on the way? We did this when DS was very little and couldn't stand the carseat. My Aunt was 2 hours in, a good friend 2 hours further along, my SIL 2 more hours in, and finally, another hour on the road. Many trips we too we stopped at every one. He was awful in the car for a while.
