Are hemmerhoids during delivery inevitible?

Does EVERYONE get these while pushing or are there people who manage to avoid them?  Just curious...

Re: Are hemmerhoids during delivery inevitible?

  • i would LOVE to avoid them this time.  hemmies were the only part of my recovery that was painful. and it lasted months...

  • I don't think everyone gets them. I have them already.

According to my doctor they only go away if you have surgery. Otherwise you just treat them and get them to shrink and not be a problem.

  • I don't think they're inevitable, but they might be more likely if you have to push for a long time. I made it through pregnancy without them, but got them after having to push for two hours.

Mine were never painful, but they are a nuisance and still haven't gone away over two years later. My doctor told me I'll need surgery to fix them.

because they come back again and again and again.

Add this to the list of things no one tells you ahead of time.  UGH.

lol!  these were my exact words to my sister who has 3 kids.

Yeah. Hemorrhoids and constipation were two things I was not prepared for. I had some really bad days of constipation in first tri....hence the hemorrhoids.

  • My butt hole hurt so bad after delivery that I honestly asked the nurse if the doctor had but stiches in my butt, that's how it felt. I would say the butt pain was far worse than the vag pain. Mine went away after a couple weeks and my doctor never said anything to me about surgery. They will flair up from time to time but I just use prep H and they are fine in a day or two.

That reminds me of a friend. She told me that she was trying to poop and she was so tired. Nothing would come out and she was screaming and crying saying her butt was stiched shut! She said she really thought it was. They gave her a mirror to convince her. Poor thing. She laughs about it now. lol

  • I didn't have a single one with DD #1.  Hopefully I don't have any with this one either!

Seriously! I knew they were possible during pregnancy and delivery, but I never knew they might not go away on their own. As TMI as it can be, I do my best to spread the word around here. lol.

  • I never actually delivered DS vaginally, but I did push for two straight hours before they took me for an emergency c/s. I never got one hemmoroid. This time around, I have them already. Oh joy.
  • No, not inevitable...I never got a single one with DS - and none yet this time around...
  • None here. I pushed with DS a little over and hour. I haven't gotten any so far with this pregnancy either.
  • I image googled hemmerhoids. Bad idea.

  • an external hemmie popped out at 37w for me and at first it was very painful, but with some proper care it's now manageable and I rarely notice it's there. The amount of pressure LO is putting down there has caused it. I have no doubt I'll have some hemmie issues after delivery, but again it's totally manageable.

I just did too because you said that. You were rightSurprise

  • I don't think everyone gets them.  I was just talking to my BFF yesterday about this and she didn't get them. I already have them and they are SO annoying and very painful for a day or 2.  I've become prepared and already bought some colace to take ASAP after delivery if the hospital doesn't give me any.

  • I avoided them with my first and I pushed for an hour and a half. She was 8'4 and 21 inches. So far this time around I've avoided them as well. So no they aren't inevitable.

    Good luck!

  • Never had them and pushed for 2.5 hours!  Hope I get that lucky with this one too!
  • I never got any, but while I was in the hospital my nurse was shocked when checking me saying "you didnt get any hemmerhoids, you didn't rip or need stitches wow"
  • So far (knock on wood) I can happily say I've never had one so I guess it's not absolutely inevitable!! :)
