Re: Clicky Poll: Work Commute

  • I'm a combo.  I work from home some but when I do go into the office it only takes me 7 minutes to get there.

  • Mine is a really weird situation.  I own my own business, but I'm currently without a storefront, so for that I work out of my home.  I am probably about to move to a showroom that will be a 30-45 minute drive, but it's already manned, so I'm only going to be there by appointment.  While I'm figuring out my business situation I'm working part time for one of the builders I do business with (as his office manager).  That office is about a 20-minute drive, so I went with that one.

  • Hey, just wanted to share with you my experience. My commute previously was 1.5 hours (48 miles) each way to work. I did it for 7 years straight. My work required me to travel quite a bit out of town, so I'm only commuting maybe 2-4 days into work. The rest of the time to the airport (which was also 1.5 hours away). So that wasnt that bad.

On certain weeks when I have to commute 5 days a week, it was really hard. I get tired of driving by Wednesday, and I have to stop for gas every 3 days which was annoying.

Few things that you might want to consider before taking this job:

1)price of gas and how much it'll cost you per month (with gas being almost $3 per gallon, it'll affect your expenses)

2)tires, oil change and brakes (you'll probably need to change this more frequently if you're commuting)

3)getting a satelite radio (helps make your drive better, plus access to traffic news)

4)what other roads will you be able to take if there's an accident on the main road that you'll be taking everyday

    Hope this helps!

This is my concern as well... this job is 50 miles from my house plus I would have to pay $4.00 in tolls everyday.  I'm quite conflicted....

  • about 20 minutes each way and I work from home every Friday.
  • Used to be 10 minutes- now my new job will be 20 minutes.  I am so spoiled with my 10 minute commute- I seriously would not want anything more than 20 minutes.

  • I got rid of my 1-1.5 hour each way commute just over two years ago and it was, by far, the best decision I've ever made. My commute was 26 miles door to door and it still took me 1-1.5 hours each way (I was driving in to Boston from the burbs).

We live in the same general area, so I know how horrible traffic can be around here - then throw in the weather? no way. I could never do it again unless it was my ultimate dream job.

  • My commute is an hour and a half...it's dreadful, but I love where I live and I have a very good job.  It's 30 minutes in the car, 30 minutes on a train, and 30 minutes of walking from the car to the train and from the train to work.
  • I work from home but I also commute to a PT job.  I can get there in 45 minutes on the weekends.  On week days it's more like an hour and 10 minutes to 2 hours if it's raining.  I love my job so it's very, very, very worth it.  I also use that as a time to plan out my day in my head, make decisions I need to make, and to listen to podcasts and radio shows.

I haven't been able to work that job in a year because of an injury and I miss that commute (when it's NOT raining).  I feel so scattered without my hour of thinking time!

  • My roundtrip every day is ~3 hours. I work long hours every day as well. Seriously consider not only the financial implications of a long commute, but also the impact on your quality of life. A long commute leaves you with little free time during the week, particularly if you also work long days.
  • I commute between two offices and my longest commute is about 40 minutes

  • Good luck on the interview!
  • I'm about 1 1/2 hours each way. It's 86 miles door to door. I've been doing it for about 3 1/2 years. I'm kind of used to it. DH is Army and has only been in for about 4 years. But, that means we have to be relatively close to post, and I've been working at this company for 9 years. I really didn't want to leave if I didn't have to, and the pay is great. The pay closer to where I live is about 1/2 what I get now, and I wouldn't be able to find a job in my field.

I get sick of it sometimes, but most days I just crank up the tunes and go. I'm lucky that I don't have to sit in traffic almost at all. It's 86 miles and it takes me about 90 minutes.
