Staining a Crib

My boss just offered us an $800 crib and well thats just too good of a deal to pass up.  We also have a dresser that was given to us, so I was wondering if we could stip the wood and refinish it?  I know nothing about wood so I wondered if any of you know if you can stain an Oak crib to look Cherry?  I'm not sure what the dresser is made of but would like to do the same so that the match.  Any suggestions?

  • uggh, all those spindles..  hope you have someone patient to help!  You can pick any stain color, but if it has the Oak wood grain, it's goign to look like oak with cherry stain...  just my opinion.  We've done alot of staining with clear woods, like maple, but I think oak stained looks like it's masquerading.  most people won't care, but I would notice :)  do it if you feel comfortable, it IS possible!

  • Anyway you might consider painting it white?

I asked DH about this (his dad is a painter who refinishes a lot of stuff and DH helps him sometimes) and he says that you could darken it toward a cherry finish but first need to remove the varnish/sealer, then darken, and then refinish.

The problem is it'd be almost impossible to match perfectly (the dresser and crib) and it would ber VERY time consuming (not to mention the yucky fumes).  The water base varnish strippers are junky and don't work very well.  Plus, I don't think you're supposed to be around varnish while PG.

  • My concern with staining or painting a crib would be when the kid gets old enough, they sometimes chew on the rails...and I really don't know enough about paint/stain to say if nontoxic paint/stain would be good enough.

Honestly I might just use the two pieces as is, or if it really bugs you you could sell the cherry dresser and buy one that matches better.

  • DH is against White...so thats out of the question.  I just thought it would be easier to put a different finish on both the woods to make them look a like, but i would hate for it to come out like crap!

We would definately buy non-toxic stains and finishes to keep her safe once she starts gnawing on it...ha ha!

  • Why don't you stain the dresser to match the crib?  That seems easier to me then staining the crib.

  • We were actually hoping to stain both items because neither of them are the colors we were going to pick if we had purchased.  I guess its just the game of making do with whatcha got...its free and beggers cant be choosers.

It was just a thought to help make it more in the theme we were looking for.  Thanks for your help ladies!
