I'm freaking myself out about DH (TMI)

So for the past couple of days (or so I thought) DH has been bleeding whenever he's had a bowel movement (I know, TMI, I'm sorry!) and I finally convinced him to go to the doctor - he has an appointment this afternoon.

Today he told me that it's not just bleeding, he's also been feeling really lethargic and kind of weak and has had bad stomach pains and it's been happening for like THREE WEEKS, not just a couple of days like he originally said!

Of course stupid me consulted Dr. Google and all I keep reading about is colo-rectal cancer and it's freaking me the eff out.  I thought it was probably just a bleeding ulcer, but where he's saying the pain is is way too low for it to be a stomach ulcer.

Tell me that it's nothing serious...please?

  • I'm sorry you two are going through this!  Hopefully its nothing.  Its a good thing he is going to the doctor to be proactive.  If anything, you both will have peace of mind by getting it checked out.

    Good luck!

  • ohh im sorry you have to go through all these worries! I'm sure it's something very simple and easy to fix. I know both my sis and dad had rectal bleeding before, and both were from a small tear caused by a big bowel movement I believe. Maybe it's something like that and the other things are just the mild flu or something and totally not related.

Try not to worry too much until you know for sure. Dr Google is never your friend!

I'll be sending positive thoughts and vibes your way.

  • I will be sending good vibes your way!  Not to scare you...but that is a slight possibility (there are tons of other explanations for that as well)...my sister in law (who I am very close to) was diagnosed with colon cancer a year ago and is now in remission...feel free to PM if you have questions.

They're so stubborn, aren't they? It took me 2 days to convince him that he needs to go - and he only agreed because I told him that my Papa had to have surgery because of a bleeding ulcer, and he doesn't want to have surgery.  Stupid men.

  • I know sometimes blood in stool that's not bright red can be a kidney problem ( not super serious) but I'll be sending T and P it's no big deal.

This freaks me out even more because his mom died of kidney disease.

I'm just staying away from the internet completely today LOL

Thanks everyone for your T&P.  I'm going to go crazy until he sees the doctor this afternoon.

  • Could just be colitis, my DH has this and it comes and goes (flare-ups).  The flare-ups can last a few weeks or a few months.  Same symptoms as your DH - bleeding and he does also feel lethargic (wears you out) and has stomach pains.

Hopefully it's something minor, don't Google!  The doctor will take care of him :)

Sama here! My grandpa has had multiple bleeding ulcers and had to have surgery. Why do men hate going to the doctor?

  • You just never know what it is until you see the Dr. We have been through some very similar situations, and they will probably want to do a colonoscopy. There is no way to tell until they can really see what is going on. Try not to get too worried yet. It may not be anything major, but it will be good to get it all checked out.

  • Well yes those can be symptoms of colon cancer but honestly I wouldn't worry too much, those are some pretty common symptoms of basic GI issues. To me it sounds like an IBS flare up. A stomach ulcer doesn't cause RED blood during a bowel movement, it would be black since the blood has been digested. So red blood indicates an issue very close to the "opening" for lack of a better way to put it, things like hemmorhoids, etc. I'f there were any issue to worry about it would be Crohn's and I wouldn't even worry about that yet. Anxiety and stress can bring on dormant GI issues, having a new baby could certainly be playing a part in his issues, that'd be my guess... but see the doc and don't stress!!! In all honesty, my opinion is that the symps dont send up any red flags if that helps at all...?

My husband has ulcerative colitis too and one of his early symptoms was rectal bleeding and being lethargic. I finally convinced him to go to the dr. and they had to do a colonoscopy which he hated, but at least they were able to see what was going on. Get him to the dr asap!

Let us know what you find out and if it is ulcerative colitis, feel free to PM me if you want to talk. :)

  • Thoughts and Prayers coming your way from STL!  I am so sorry that you are going thru this. I know how tough it can be to see your DH in pain. (It only makes matters worse when they fib about the pain, or try to be macho) Please keep us posted!!!!

  • If it's not bright red or a large amount, it's probably that he needs fiber.  It happens to my DH and he got "inspected" and he was fine.  It could also be hemorrhoids.  The fiber pills didn't really help but bunches of water and Fibercon has worked wonders on my DH.  Hope everything's okay!
