Babies: 9 - 12 Months

starting solids on saturday

yup...gotta love the 6 month solid questions.  :-)

ok...i am the kind of persons who likes to follow directions.  tell me what to do and i'll do it.  it seems like this solids thing is just trying things out, trying different quantities, trying different flavors, trial and error.....i need directions!!!  LOL!!

Re: starting solids on saturday

  • Start slow.

Are you starting with cereal or fruit/veg?

Don't be surprised if he eats none of it the first time or would rather play with the spoon. He also may gobble it up one day and refuse it the next.

Unfortunately it is all trial and error.  Good luck!

  • Are you asking for advice from us?  If so, stay away from acidic fruits at first (when we started solids we gave LO pears and he got a wicked diaper rash).  I'd do bananas and peas at first.  Then apples....then whatever else.  We've been told peaches can cause diaper rash because of the acidity.  They have some great sites with meal ideas.  We started with just one "meal" of a 1/2 can of solids at dinner (5 pm or so), and have now worked in breakfast and lunch.  We started solids at 5 months.

we are starting with cereal.  pedi suggested trying something new every 5 days.  he said to then try veggies and after veggies try fruits.  to start he said to give him a little cereal at his mid-morning feeding (do i give him a bottle, too?) and then another at his 3'ish feeding.  when does he have 3 meals a day?

  • This website totally helped me https://wholesomebabyfood.com/. I was feeling so lost when it came to solids.  We just started a few weeks ago.  He didn't eat a lot at first, but within a couple of weeks, he was gobbling things down.

We started with cereal, then bananas, then sweet potato.  He still gives a face when we introduce something new, but within a couple of tries, he likes it.

We started with just breakfast and after two weeks added supper too.

YES!!!!!!!!!! :-)  and LOTS of it!

our pedi said to start with cereal...then try veggies and then try fruits.  he seemed real adamant in doing veggies before fruits.

  • We are still hit or miss with 3 meals. We started the third at 7 months but they barely eat it. I din't know if they aren't ready or just too tired by dinner time.

We give solids about and 1.5 between bottles (they have bottles every 3 hours).

Don't start when he's really hungry because he'd rather have the instant bottle than the slower filling solids.  We started with rice cereal, then oatmeal then added in some applesauce etc.

that is EXACTLY the reason that our pedi suggested starting him with a feeding around 10'ish and another around 3'ish.  which totally SUCKS, since i will basically only get to feed him on weekends.  :-(  when will i start to feed him at breakfast, lunch and dinner (so that 2 out of the 3 feedings i can feed him)?

We are in the same boat. Its why we give dinner so late (when we're home) but they don't really eat it.  I don't want daycare giving them all 3 meals though. It really sucks.

so, should i stick to the times the doctor suggested or say screw it and make up my own times?  i want to do the best thing for Ryan, but it's my kid and i want to see all of the cuteness!!!!!

  • What time is his earliest bottle? Sometimes the boys take an 8oz bottle at 4:00am and at that time I give solids at 6:00am before we leave for daycare at 7:00. This way I get in on the breakfast action and crazy photos and they are ready for a bottle once they've settled in at daycare.

LOL at crazy photos!  that's me!!  i MUST get those pictures!!!!

right now he drinks about 4 1/2 oz around 6am (he's not a big breakfast person).  He takes between 5 and 6oz every 3 hours thereafter.  his last bottle is around 7 and he drinks between 6-8 oz (for the past two nights he's had 8oz).  he's on his 6th night in a row of sttn, so that middle of the night bottle has stopped...for now.
