Desperate - Colic Help

After 3 weeks of both them having colic I am just about gone completely crazy.  DS, DD or both spend 3-5 hours a day crying.  We have tried just about everything and I feel like nothing is working anymore. Walking, bouncing, white noice, music, changing formula, and driving around.

Please send suggestions my way of what worked for you.  TIA!

Re: Desperate - Colic Help

  • Ugh - for as much as I miss J being a newborn, I really hated the weeks we dealt with colic.  She had her moment every night from 7 - 10 pm.  In addition to wearing her in a sling, my God sent was colic calm.  Be wary of dark stools as it is black in color due to vegetable charcoal. It really helped and we also gave her biogaia probiotics, although those take a while to take affect.  So sorry you have to deal with colic X2 but it really does pass and I remember the worst of it being over by 8 weeks or so, by 3 months we were much better .

Thanks for the information.  I ordered it now.  I keep telling myself that we will get through this.  It is so hard to watch my happy babies become so miserable everyday.

  • What I thought was just colic turned out to be reflux.  As soon as we got DD on medicine for that she was an entirely different baby..
  • I didn't have a colic baby but I've read posts where putting them in water helped the colic. Is that a possibility with two, just to get them in the bath for a while?

  • It is so so hard :(. Only one of mine had it (and both also have reflux so mealtimes sucked too) and it was so stressful, I feel for you.

The things that worked best for us were the basic techniques from Happiest Baby on the Block- watch the video if you haven't already. But truly what helped was holding her swaddled while sitting on a yoga ball & bouncing/shushing at the same time. When it was especially bad, we used the hair dryer or vacuum. In the nursery we held the hair dryer (not blowing on her ;) ) about a foot or 2 away from her & it would immediately quiet her and in our family room we keot a vacuum (actually bought a crappy one so as not to burn out the good one) and would turn it on for about 5 min at a time and it would also immediately quiet her. She would have trouble eating when she got worked up so we'd also feed her w/ the vacuum running sometimes.

good luck- it will pass but it seems like it never will. make sure you get some breaks & time for yourself.

  • Zantac did wonders for us with my daughter.  She had silent reflux(never spit up) and was a handful until we discovered this at 8 weeks.

DD does have reflux.  She is on prevacid.  DS isn't on anything but I think that is our next step to try.

  • I dont have experience in this department yet.But I have seen my SIL use gripe water for her colicy son. Also you can try avoiding certain foods that are known to cause colic in babies if you are BF. ex. certain beans(lentils are okie) and even shellfish

correction: garlic is okie to eat. https://www.spiceindiaonline.com/breast_feeding_moms

  • Honestly, time is the only thing that will really help! DS1 was very colicky as a  baby. I remember one night DS worked all day, then went out after work so I was home alone with him from 6am-midnight. He cried from 4-midnight. That was possibly the worst day I ever had with him. Over time he just got better and better and now he is a delightful toddler. But those days were rough! Going for walks helped, car rides, and just getting out of the house. I am not sure how easy that is with two though.
