S/O: How do you find non-family babysitters?

To date, my mom is our primary babysitter. It works out very well since she's on the short list of those I trust to leave DD with, and she (of course) loves spending time with her granddaughter. It is becoming more challenging, however, since she is in MD and we are in VA, and traffic is a bear! How did you find a local babysitter?

  • I know in MD there's a website and a phone number you can actually call and they'll send you a list of available day care providers.  I'm sure VA has something similiar.  I know when I searched for it on google, I typed in MD licensed child care and it came up.  I think its through the state.

  • to find my (totally amazing and responsible) high school babysitter i emailed all the moms in my neighborhood.  (we have an contact list of the whole street, about 30 houses.)  a few people responded with some good info, and one was our darling.  been with us for over a year now.  she's graduating in june to go to college, so i will have to find a new one locally!

this! I made sure to get to know some other moms in my neighborhood and asked for babysitter recommendations.

  • I've been sucking up to the neighbor girl.  LOL.  She's not quite old enough yet, but, maybe next year.

  • We only have one babysitter and she is an assistant at my friend's daughter's day care.  She's a grad student and very responsible.  I'd love to find a few high school or college-aged girls as backup, but haven't had any luck yet. I live in a small townhouse community and there aren't a lot of moms that live there to ask for recs.
