Strick Bed Rest ladies..please help

Today I was put on bed rest due to my shorting cervix (went from 39 to 25) and starting to funnel. :(   I will only be 22 weeks tomorrow so i am terrified.  I was so emotional i can not remember all the details the nurse was telling me about bed rest.  I will call tomorrow to clarify.
I think she said i could sit up on the sofa as long as my feet were up.  So i was wondering what others' strick bed rest orders were like, she said i coudl shower, go to the bathroom, grab something from the kitchen on way back from bathroom but to keep a cooler near the sofa. Is it ok to sit up?  Sorry if i am rambeling, i am still very emotional and out of it:) Thanks!

  • hi, sorry about your shortening cervix, but there are several of us here and so far, fingers crossed everything is going ok for everyone.

I am on modified bed rest for a shortening cervix.  Was over 3, and dropped down to a 2.3.  I had a cerclage put in at 24 weeks, have made it to 28.5  weeks and holding strong so far :)

I am allowed up to go to bathroom, short showers and quick trips to kitchen.  My dr's orders were to be off my feet as much as possible.  For the most part I stay on my bed with my hips/legs feet elevated.  I occasionally move to the couch but again with hips/legs/feet elevated.

I try to stay on my side, but do sit up to eat...which I do way too often :)

Rest and being off your feet is really the key, I believe, so think positive, and stay down as much as possible.

Ask your Dr. about the possibility of the cerclage, it has given me good peace of mind.

    Take care.

  • You and I are in very similar boats.  I just found out last Friday that my cervix is 4 mm and am on bedrest until the baby comes.  I will be 21 weeks on Friday.  It's been very scary and emotional.

My docs said that you can recline, just not sit up at 90 degrees.

There are other ladies here that I have been on Bed rest for awhile and they are very helpful.

Feel free to page me or PM me if you need to chat.

  • Strict bed rest for me means, I can be on the couch, feet up, or I can be in the bed, feet up.  I'm allowed to go to the bathroom and I can take a shower.  But that's it.  No house work, no laundry, nothing.  I do make myself quick meals (i.e. warm stuff up in the microwave, make toast, get a drink, etc.) because I'm home alone most of the day while my DH works.  But, I'm not sure if I'm really even supposed to be doing that.
  • Oh, and I can prop myself up as long as my feet are still elevated.
  • I'm sorry you're going through this. Sending some good thoughts to you.

I was on bedrest at home for about a month, and have been in the hospital on bedrest for about 1.5 weeks. (And on various meds during this time.)

What you mentioned was pretty close to what I was doing at home. Now that I'm in the hospital, I'm only allowed to take a 10 minute shower every day (and at first it was only every other day.) By 10 minutes, they mean 10 minutes of being on my feet, not 10 minutes under the water. Pretty hard to achieve, so I'm trying my best. ;)

I do have more contractions when I am sitting straight up, so if I'm on my back I try to bit a little reclined (but not so flat I get lightheaded) and keep a pillow under one hip.

  • With my last one I went on bedrest around the same time you did.  I already had a cerclage in but was starting with preterm labor too.  I was allowed to sit up but not straight up.  I was allowed to sit in bed or in the living room but had to be on the couch with my feet up.

Eventually towards the end I had to lay mainly on my left side and was only allowed a quick shower every other day.  I wasn't allowed to get up either to get my food or drink.  This was only towards the end when things were getting worse.  I did end up in the hospital 2 to control the contractions.

I did end up with a healthy baby boy who was born 4 weeks early.  He is now 8 and we are expecting our next.  There is hope.  I also think it's wise to clarify with your dr.  Good Luck.  ~Jenna

  • Hope everything works out OK.  Certainly call to check and play it very conservatively tonight...when I was on strict bed rest for a couple of days they meant literally don't get out of bed for anything (i.e., bed pan).
