Delivery experiences at Rex or WakeMed Cary?

Please post pros and cons of both: if you have experiences or know someone who has. I am currently with an OB that is affiliated with Rex, however DH told me last night he heard a lot of negative about Rex in the past and heard yesterday that WakeMed Cary is the best. I really really don't want to find a new OB(I go to Wilkerson), but I also want a good delivery experience and know the nurses at the birth center can make all the difference as well. I am planning to go as natural as possible and don't want to be hooked up to a bunch of IVs as soon as I get there, so if you have experience on that front as well, please share.

I delivered at Rex and had a wonderful experience. The nurses were fantastic, the rooms were very nice, and their room service food is awesome! I've heard great things about both Rex and WakeMed Cary, so I think you'd be fine either way. I can't speak on the IV front, since I had to start an IV right away to receive antibiotics for Step B, but they were perfectly willing to unhook me when I wasn't getting the ABs to let me walk around, etc, and I never felt like they pushed drugs or anything on me.

If you really want to go all natural and have a "birthing center" experience, you might want to bypass both hospitals and go with an actual birthing center. There's one in Chapel Hill (I think), I don't remember the name, but I think ECUGirl delivered there.

I delivered at Rex. I had a wonderful experience, not one complaint. Everyone was very nice. My rooms were nice (delivery and post partum). I've never really heard anyone say that had a horrible experience at Rex so this is news to me. I wasn't hooked up to a bunch of IV's I had one IV for fluid but that was because I knew I was going to have an epi and they want you to have at least one bag pre-epi. but it wasn't as soon as I got there that's for sure. The nurses are what will make your delivery experience because frankly your Doc just isn't there that long.

I delivered at Rex.
No complaints.
I was in labor for 25 hours so i went thru 3 nurses, all very good.
They were very supportive and open to any decisions i chose.
Patient advocates for sure.
In PP i went thru many nurses and aides, 99% of them were great!
They let the baby room in or we could send him to the nursery when we chose to. They were very supportive and helpful with breastfeeding. They were always quick to lend a hand when i called.

Accomodations were nice too. No worries, you'll be fine!

I can't say anything about the hospitals, since I haven't given birth and don't know enough about others births to give you pros/cons. However, if you want to research the birth center in Chapel Hill it's called Women's Birth and Wellness Center. I've been going there since day 1 of prenatal treatment and I'm looking forward to delivering there anytime now! The midwives are awesome.

I delivered at WakeMed Cary and had a great experience! I couldn't get drugs fast enough :-) But they didn't push them on me at all. totally up to me. the night i delivered was very busy and I did get pushed back on a delivery a bit as my doctor had to do a couple emergency c-sections, but my experience as a whole was great! And, WakeMed Cary just redid their birthing center. it's really nice!

Yeah, I've never heard anyone said anything bad about Rex! I loved it there.. I had an awesome experience. All of my nurses were fantastic, and the rooms were nice (though I got one of the older ones--many are huge and have been renovated). Even the food was good. I was there almost 5 days (18 hr labor, then c/s), and even then really wasn't itching to leave... hehe.

I LOVED Rex. I went in hoping to go natural so they didn't hook me up until 3 hours later when I asked for an epidural. They were great and never pressured me either way. The first hour was getting checked in, changed, and baby monitored, second hour walking the hospital and the last hour was getting my IV and getting an EPI. GL

I also had a very good experience at Rex. And I've known people who have had good experiences at WakeMed in Cary. I don't think you can go wrong either place.

I delivered at WakeMed Cary and had a wonderful experience. The nurses were great, and I had no complaints during my stay of four days/nights. I can't really comment on the IVs since I was hooked up right away b/c I was being induced and had to have antibiotics for Strep B. I had an epidural but it was after I was in labor for a while. I got it per my request, and the nurses never pushed me to get it. I had to ask for it.

I did have some complications and had to have an emergency C section. It happened so fast that I really didn't know what was going on at first (one minute I'm in my room, literally the next minute I'm being rushed to the OR) but the nurses and doctors in the operating room did a great job of keeping me and my DH calm! Also, the rooms at WakeMed Cary are really nice and spacious. They've recently been redone with flat screens, spa like showers, etc. Things like that are nice when you've been there for several days!

If you do switch practices to deliver at WakeMed, I go to Physicians for Women in Cary and have been very pleased there. It's a small practice - only two doctors - so you get to know the doctors and nurses very well. Dr. Seidel is my main doctor and he is great!

I went to Wilkerson as well and delivered at Rex. I can't tell you enough good things and had an awesome experience. I had a c-section because Keira's heart rate dropped with my contractions so I was there for 4 days and didn't want to go home! Everyone was great and the nurses were amazing. A+. All of my friends and my cousin's have delievered there and had great experiences as well.

I see the same docs and were also really pleased with WakeMed Cary. The nurses were very attentive and the lactation consultants were amazing and made themselves available several times a day for the first 2 days -- couldn't have asked for better help.

Actually, WM Raleigh is best (hehe!) In all seriousness, they have the best NICU and children's hospital in the area, which is why I chose that location. I figured if my baby needed something major, and I was at Rex or Cary, they'd transport her to Raleigh anyways, so why not deliver there. Plus, the OB that several of my friends recommended delivered there. So even though I am a few minutes closer to Cary and Rex, it was worth a longer drive to deliver at that hospital.

I also delivered at Rex and had a wonderful experience, I won't repeat everything that was already said, but I had an unplanned c-section and thought that I was treated very well. I also was admitted to L&D there while pregnant after a car accident and they were wonderful. We even got a hand written note from the director of the birth center after delivery in the mail saying it was their pleasure to have had me as a patient and to have helped deliver Jocelyn.

I have heard that delivering at Wake Med Cary is like delivering at the Ritz, it is very upscale, but that is not really important!!

I delievered at Rex and had a great experience. I went in wanting to try and go natural for as long as possible. I was never pushed to get an epi and my L&D nurses were amazing and so supportive. I was on the maxed amount of pitocin and still wasn't dialating and when i got the 1st epi and it didnt work, and i said I really need something because at that point I had 2 catheters (a pressure one to check my contractions and a regular one) my nurse knew how uncomfortable I was and got right on them and got me a 2nd one which worked awesome. i ended up with a c-section as DS was sunny side up and even with pitocin wasn't dialating. But the nurses were great in L&D and on the Ob floor. But I have also heard great things about WakeMed Cary and Raleigh as well. I'd say if u are happy with your ob/gyn practice then i'd stick with them and go with where they deliver.

I delivered at WakeMed Cary and had an AWFUL experience. I was induced for pre-e at 37w 4d. The delivery was fine, it was my care after that was the problem. My pre-e didn't go away after delivery like it does with most women. My BP was sky high, and only getting higher. There were certain symptoms that my MW told me to look for and immediately tell the nurse if I was experiencing. Well, the day I was discharged, I was experiencing them all! I kept telling the nurse what I was feeling - and she blew me off. She gave me pain meds and I was discharged. Litterally (to the minute) I was out of the hospital for 1.5 hours before I had to go back. I was re-admitted again and the ER was flabberghasted that I was discharged at all! When I saw my MW, she was never told of the symptoms I was experiencing.

I know everyone has different experiences. I'm sure my experience does't say so much about WakeMed Cary as it does about the Nurse who cared for me. GL to you!

I had a great experience at Rex and I don't need to repeat anything everyone else has already said.

I did have a bad experience there with one of my postpartum nurses....she was absolutely awful and I had to make a complaint. She didn't check me the entire 1st pp day...like at all, never laid hands on me. Then she came to get DD to take to the nursery for her hep shot and kissed my baby. I seriously thought i was going to rip her lips off!! Who does that?! Anyway-seems I'm the only one who had any sort of bad experience at Rex....hoping that nurse is gone by now. I would completely go back b/c besides her my experience was awesome...just the luck of the draw that I had her that one day....

LOVED Rex. Our L&D nurses were amazing & I still want to send the nurse that helped deliver Harrison a gift. They made me feel very comfortable & encouraged.

Granted, I was hooked up to IVs the moment I got in, but it was because I was induced without any beginnings of spontaneous labor.

I will say that I feel lucky I didn't have a c-section. It took a LONG time for me to progress & he didn't drop until the last hour. At 13 hours of the max amt of pitocin, I was still only 2 cm dilated, at -3 station, & 50% effaced. I think some OBs would have given up on me at that point, but Dr. Martin was hardcore about letting me go vaginally. She said that as long as baby looked great, she was willing to just keep letting me go. & she was there for about an hour with me, helping me push, instead of just showing up at the very end to catch him. I am forever thankful for her.
