Uggg....not sure what to do about work....advice needed

I am almost 39 weeks pregnant, and I teach 2nd grade. My last day of work is supposed to be Friday. I woke up this morning at 2:50am and had contractions every 10 minutes for 3 hours. They weren't painful, just had lower back pain and slight cramping. I called L & D, and they said they would hate for me to come in and get sent home since 10 minutes is still too far apart. So, I called in sick, and went back to sleep and now my contractions are really far apart (30 minutes). AT my appointment on Monday I was 2-3 cm, 80% effaced, -2 station, but I was that same place one week ago as well. Would you start your leave a few days early, or does this sound like false labor?

  • I'd start a couple days early....  that way you can relax!

  • I would start it a few days early... Your kids will miss you, but you need to get your rest...

  • Sounds like the same pre-labor that I've been dealing with for weeks. But you might enjoy the extra couple of days off...and who knows, maybe a little relaxation will kick start things :)

  • I want to leave work now! Do you want your water to break in front of your second graders? Seriously, though, that question only you can answer, because you know what you can afford and can't afford. I would personally stay home just because I am a wimp. But DH would get upset because that is money out of our pockets (he's right).

  • To me it sounds like false labor but everyone is different I would call your OB and discuss it with him. As far as whether or not you should start your leave early, it's your call. If you don't mind going into labor there and having to leave then go. When I worked, my thought was I'd rather save every day possible to be with DD after the delivery. That was before I became a SAHM though.

  • I have been in a similar pattern since Friday. So, seeing as how I've been holding like this for almost a week now, I wouldn't start early. Unless it doesn't impact how long you will be out- I wouldn't want to miss time at home with my baby.
  • I've been like that for a week and a half now and stopped working last week... and I'm still here. So if I were you, if you can I'd just play it by ear. If you make all your sub plans now then if you decide to call in last minute you've already got things prepared. I guess it also depends on how easy it is for you to get a sub. I know in the districts around here, it's pretty easy to get one the day of, but it's probably not like that everywhere.

  • I'd start leave a little early to rest, but I wouldn't get my hopes up.  I've been dealing with pre-term labor since 32 weeks.  (I was on bedrest and meds to keep the contractions down from 32-35 weeks.)  I had/have contractions every 10 minutes for at least an hour or two a day and then they go away.  They've gotten worse and are "painful enough" to go in for if they'd just pick up and get consistent.  I was sure we were going to the hospital yesterday afternoon and then they were gone last night.  They're back today but nothing as painful and more spread out.  I didn't have this at all with my girls (or maybe just one or two really painful contractions but nothing time-able or consistent before I was in labor).  It's driving me nuts going on 6 weeks of this on again, off again, but just how it is sometimes.

My point is you could have your baby in the next few hours/days or this could go on for weeks off and on.  Really, it could go either way.  But the rest is nice if you want/need it.

  • It would depend on the leave policy at the school if I would choose to start my maternity leave early or not. I know that I'm working right up to the day that I'm scheduled for (Unless of course she comes early) because I'm already loosing enough money as is. Working at a private school sucks...::sigh::
  • i teach too, but highschoolers, so i think i can choose to not interact with them as much (i.e. teach sitting down from my desk). if you can, take off a few days early and relax. if you think you can grind it out, then do so. its really up to you, you know your body
