Leaking Louise AKA the Choker

My left boob is always engorged to the point where as I take it out of my bra is leaks everywhere, it's hypersensitive I guess, which is why we call it leaking louise. However the real problem is that I have a really overactive letdown with it and LO almost always chokes on breastmilk, only from Leaking Louise. I've tried block feeding, where I keep her on the same breast for 5 hours and it helps a little but when we switch to leaking louise LO always chokes during the first feeding. Usually it's just a quick cough and she's good to go but occasionally she chokes so hard that it takes her a minute to recoop from it, and it scares the crap out of me.

Any advice?

side laying is good, the extra milk sort of 'dribbles out' rather than choking them. They do eventually keep up with the squirting though.

Could you either manually express a small amount of milk from the left, or pump for a few minutes prior to feeding from the left? That might lessen the excessive initial squirting when LO latches on.

I would manual pump an ounce or two and freeze it but I guess that depends if you want a freezer stash or not.

This. Also, I kept a burp cloth under DS' chin/next to my boob to catch the squirts when DS unlatched and started choking. I could also hand express a little into it if it was really out of control. Eventually DS mastered the squirting

if you can't do side-lying, try to lean back when you nurse so the milk has to go "uphill"
