Babies: 0 - 3 Months

How many do I need?

How many newborn sized onesies do I really need? I have about a dozen right now.  Should I take back the latest gift- a 3pack of carter's NB onesies? I just feel like if they only fit up to 8lbs, he'll outgrown that in the first week!

Re: How many do I need?

  • You will go through a lot of onsies since they are used with everything as an undershirt and you will require a lot of changes. That said Gerber runs small and has a tendency to shrink, so I would return it and get a different brand or hold off to see how big your LO actually is when born.
A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • My LO was 8lbs8oz at birth and she stayed in NB for a lot longer than I expected (can't remember exactly how long but longer than a week!) Every baby is different and will grow differently but if you can hang on to them and take them back later I would just in case.
  • Every baby is different. Some wear NB for months, while others never fit into it at all.

My kid was 7 lb 8 oz and wore NB for about 2-3 weeks. I had about 5 sleepers, 8 onesies, and a few pairs of pants. He lived in the sleepers for the first weeks.

  • You can probably get by with none.  Even if baby is under 9 pounds they can still fit into the 0-3 month size and have room to grow.  I did get a few newborn sizes but DS was only in them for a few days and now is in 0-3 month only.
  • I think a dozen is a good amount.  We only had a few NB sizes b/c I never thought DD would be small enough for that size, but she definitely was for a few weeks.  The 0-3 month clothes were way too big for the first few weeks, so even if they grow out of them quickly, they are worth having for whatever time he wears them.
  • We had to buy more.  O was  born 7lbs13oz, but of course lost some.  She didn't start growing out of newborn clothing completely until 7-8 weeks (almost 10lbs).  It really depends on how big they are.

And, after you wash them, they will shrink.  Gerber and Circo run small.

  • Oh and DEFINITELY get lots of sleepers, for whatever size he is.  They can pretty much live in those!
  • DD was 7lbs 15oz when she was born and is just shy of 10 lbs right now. She is still in newborn size and will be for a while. I have tons of newborn clothes, thank goodness.

  • I wished I had more when LO was born. He was 7 lbs but everything was big on him.
  • FWIW- Henry was 8lb 9oz at birth and wore newborn clothes the first month.

  • Although I wouldnt buy a  ton of NB outfits, things like onesies and sleepers are good, just leave tags on some so you can return them

We are still in NB clothes, although DS is just now over 8lbs.  But I dont see him growing out of his stuff in the next week or so.

  • I don't usually use onesies that often, I never feel like they are warm enough, unless for layering and it hasn't been that cold here lately, DS was 6.5 lbs at birth and is still wearing NB at 2.5 weeks.  We have about 10 or so sleepers that we alternate and always have extra clean.  I do a load of laundry a day though...

  • Carter's NB onesies shrink and are hard to put over their heads IMO.  I'd rather use the 0 to 3
  • My LO never fit in NB.  I used about 8 sleepers in 0-3 when he was born and he was out of 0-3 at about 1 month old.  I'd keep the tags on most of what you have and wait to see if you need it and if your LO fits.  My DS also doesn't fit in anything Gerber.  The arms and legs are so small (length is fine, its jsut the my DS's arms and legs don't fit).
