3rd Trimester

Flying at 32 weeks

Can I get some opinions on this? I asked my Dr. about it and he said it was ok to fly up to 36-37 weeks as long as I don't have any complications (I've had none). This is my second pregnancy. I'm just asking for more opinions because my husband is nervous and it's making me a little nervous! We live in the Northeast and our flight will be 3 hours. I will have my 17 month old with me on the way down (by myself) but my mom is flying back up with us- so she'll be able to help with my DD. Other than my lap getting smaller, I don't feel any different. This will be our last trip to see our family for a WHILE- probably until the baby is a few months old, at least. Opinions?! TIA!

Re: Flying at 32 weeks

  • My last flight was around 34weeks and it wasnt terrible.   Just be sure to take some water and snacks on the plane....and if the flight is very long try to get an aisle seat so you have easy access to the bathroom!

  • Good to hear!! :) I do have an isle seat, so I'm good there! So far, the flight isn't full---hopefully it will stay that way. Then maybe the person that got the seat next to me will move so we can have two seats to ourselves :)
  • I am flying this weekend at 34 wks.  I am not worried about it at all.  I've flown at least once a month since being pregnant and it hasn't been any different from pre-pregnancy flying for me.

  • I flew with DD#1 at 28 weeks by myself.  She was about 15 months old.  I would highly recommend getting your DD a seat.  Like you said your lap is getting smaller.  Plus I tend to get motion sick when I'm PG which I don't normally.  A hot squirmy body on my lap wouldn't be the most fun.  Either way, you'll probably be fine, but I recommend buying the ticket/seat for your DD.
  • I have had no complications, and flew to NYC around Christmas.  I returned at around 28 weeks - mind you, I'm showing more than the average person.

I can tell you I was extremely uncomfortable.  Sitting for so long, with the belly pressure on my back, actually made it hard to breathe (I am not afraid of flying).  The flight was a turbulent 1.5 hours, and I was horribly uncomfortable for all of them.

  • I'm flying alone at 32 weeks and my doctor has said it's fine.  My husband is not thrilled and really doesn't want me to go (baby shower), but I really want to go.  The only reason I'm worried is because my hometown is very rural and I really don't want to have any problems while I'm there and have to deal with the local hospital and likely a doctor I went to high school with.
It took 3 1/2 long years, but we finally got our little miracle!

  • Flew fine at 32 weeks - aisle seat will definitely be a plus! Be sure to get up and walk around when you can - that really helped me. Bring some snacks so you don't get cranky :) Good luck.?
  • I just flew at 28 1/2 weeks, and it was... well, it sucked for me. my flight was from WA to LA, about a 2.5 hour flight. I fly all the time (i'm in the Navy, family lives east coast, im stationed west coast). but it made me feel like i was in the first tri again. i felt really sick to my stomach and sought out a barf bag as soon as we lifted off. The air pressure also made DD bounce around like a hot potato in there. everything was fine, just uncomfortable for me. i suggest an AISLE seat. as soon as that fasten seat belt sign goes off, take a stroll. surprisingly that was the only thing that helped (walking). it isn't unsafe or anything, just uncomfortable. the shorter the flight, the better. AND if you can get a flight with Virgin America, DO IT. they have way more leg room. i could stretch out and i didn't hit the elbow of the girl next to me once. lol

     GL!

  • I've been flying a bit & have my last flight tomorrow... I flew at Christmas around 30 weeks.  I don't know if I could have handled a toddler on my lap, even for a leg of a trip!  The flight was fine, but it was the day after Christmas, and the airline had instituted a rule about not getting up from your seat 1 hour prior to expected landing (and it was a 1.5 hour flight), so that added to the discomfort.  Some airlines are still doing this, so be aware.  I got very warm on this particular flight and the only thing that finally helped was sucking on ice.  Other than the actual discomfort during flying time, I felt fine immediately after and have had no issues.  Have a good trip!
  • My doctor also said it is okay to fly up until 35-36 weeks. I fly pretty frequently from Northern to Southern California. I would just suggest taking some water, some snacks, and getting an aisle seat that will allow for walks (keep that circulation flowing) and bathroom breaks. (Oh and maybe a lumbar pillow...my back gets pretty uncomfortable in those airplane seats). :)

    Have Fun!?

That's too funny about the dr. likely being someone you went to high school with! I'm going home for the same reason - baby shower- and I really want to make the trip. I think I'll be fine- I've flown a lot this pregnancy.... I have an aisle seat... I just needed to hear from other ladies in the same boat I'm in!
