How much money do you give as a gift for a friend's wedding?

I am attending a friend's wedding who has very expensive taste. She is a co-worker/friend who I have known for about 7 years. I always thought the general rule to follow was giving as much money as you thought your plate costs plus a gift. I don't know if I can afford 300 bucks. What do you think?

Usually around $100 (more if either of us is in the bridal party - then it's usually a bridal party chip in gift like a BBQ or some other large gift..). That seems to be the norm. in our circle of friends.....

yeah normally you give enough to cover your plate but IMO when people decide to have it at a place that is that expensive, i shouldnt be expected to cover it - you should just know that you will not break even or 'make anything' off the cards.. kwim?

i would give maybe 200$? thats what i would give to a close friend if it were me.

I would give as much as you are comfortable spending. I don't always follow that rule because I can't afford a $300 gift either. I usually spend $80-$100 for a good friend and $40-$50 for everyone else.

ditto...$100 for most wedding. When I was younger and more broke between $40-$75.

Thank you ladies. I didn't want to look cheap, so my DH said to, "ask your Bump friends." I don't post that much, but I guess I talk enough about all of your advice that DH picked up on it.
