Postpartum Depression

Any second time (or more) moms here?

If you had ppd with your first child, did you do anything to prevent or minimize ppd the second time around?

Re: Any second time (or more) moms here?

  • I tried to, but it didn't work out so well.  The second time around, though, I had a ton of anxiety, which I didn't have with the first.

At any rate, I set my DH and close family up to know that I would need to rely on them for help.  I also continued my meds through the birth and upped the mg's after I delivered.  Setting small goals, like getting the mail every other day, or making dinner helped me lessen the anxiety over time.  It was killer to do it, though, when I wasn't feeling up to much of anything but sitting on the couch crying.

Counseling also helped.  The hospital where we delivered is really pushing PPD awareness.  They've teamed up with the VNA to provide mom's support after you go home.  Betwen the PPD group that is run by the hospital and the VNA I was feeling functional by about week 10.

  • I'm here, but I didn't have PPD with DD. Well, at least no where close to what I had this time around.

  • I had PPD with DD as well and I tried to prevent it, but had quite a few unexpected things happen within a week of DS being born, so that all went to hell!! He had to be readmitted for phototherapy for jaundice at 3 days old for 2 days, then his newborn screening test came back elevated for Cystic Fibrosis. His second screen also came back elevated, and then he was diagnosed with CF at 2 1/2 weeks old. So yeah, my emotional state was exacerbated by circumstances out of my control. Thank God for a supportive husband, Zoloft and Xanax!!!
  • I had it for about 13 months after my son and Then it was gone but after I had my daughter it just doesn't want to go away.  It has been 21 months now and now I feel just plain crazy!!  I didn't get any treatment after my son but this time I have been taking meds.  I really didn't think it would happen again must less get worse.
  • I asked for help earlier!  Last time I waited and waited but this time around I knew I needed help right away.  I lined up meds and a therapist right away.

  • I asked for help earlier. With DD I waited 4mos before I finally went in. Then I denied it being PPD. I wasn't honest with my DR or myself. I had pretty bad depression while preg with DS and was screened 3 times by 6wks PP by my OB then put on meds at my 6wk appt. I ended up waiting until 8wks to start them because I was scared of it affecting DS.
