so my OB's office offers breast feeding and baby care class for free. I thought I might check them out and ran this by one of the female doctors at the office. She agreed it would be a great idea, she got a lot out of it. What she didn't know is that I used to work in OB and I used to help women breast feed all the time. Granted, it's been 9 yrs, so I figured a refresher wouldn't be bad.
So, I went to "class"'... where the instructor is a Nurse Midwife (I'm all for that, as I a mid-level provider myself) who goes on to take a poll of the room to see how many people are utilizing midwives vs. docs and then points out the 2-3 of us using the docs and says, "Now I just need to convert you few." We then get to watch a 30 minute video on latching on and then she answered a few questions... and showed us the 4 holds for breastfeeding (which were not covered in the video).
Why did I waste an hour of my time? Apparently I'm more sensitive about crap too lately, b/c I was offended at her comment about "converting" me to a midwife patient. I thought and prayed long and hard before deciding to go with the docs instead of the midwives for my first pregnancy knowing I personally have spina bifida. ?Where did she get off??? Anyway, vent over, sorry. I'm glad I didnt' stay for baby care class. (Please don't flame, just needed this off my chest and didn't want to share with DH b/c he already doesn't want to go to child birth education class...which I'm still very much looking forward to).
Re: so upset I went to BF class today...
Ugh, I really dislike people who have an attitude like this woman's. I am hoping for a drug free natural birth but I have been told by various providers that I have come in contact with that it's not "real" if I don't have a midwife and have the baby at home. (I'm with a doc, in the hospital.)
What's amazing is that these women hate people "judging" them for making all natural decisions when they are just judging others right back!
I'm sorry you wasted your time. It sounds like you made the right decision in going with a doctor. Don't listen to that crazy lady!
Could it have been a joke?
That's what I'm hoping for as well. With the spina bifida history, I am a little frightened of epidurals and I really don't want a c-section. I've seen L&D with docs and with MW and with really really good nursing staff. With good nursing staff, even with an MD, you can do it. I saw women do it. Will you have to stand your ground, yes! Epidurals will be offered, drugs will be offered, but you can do it and the right nurse will stand by you 100%.
She could have been joking, like i said, my attitude has not been the best lately. I just thought it was rather inappropriate.
i think you're overreacting. She was kidding. You went to a typical BFing class. What were you expecting?
You may find the same thing in yur CB class, btw. None of it was "new", but I'm glad I went.
i'm sorry. i too wasted mine and dh's time with bfing and childbirth classes with my first pg. i too am a nurse but don't work in l&d so i thought it would be a good idea since it had been 8 yrs since nursing school.
the 'teacher' wasn't even an l&d nurse (she was a picu nurse) and just showed video and READ OUT OF A BOOK but had no practical knowledge. it SUCKED. i was pissed too. dh still holds it over my head b/c he didn't want to go in the first place
It might have been said jokingly, but still a little unprofessional. Your OB's office recommended it? Sorry it seemed wasted.
Mine got cancelled due to weather, so I have been reading alot on LLL. You probably already know most the good resources though.
... *looks around* umm where you in my class today... lol
no flames from me. I am all for midwives and what they do, but I am strictly on a DR only rotation b/c of my c/s.... her "convertion" wouldnt have worked
haha thats b/c you have to pay for that one!!! lol
haha very true! I felt like it was worth it tho
honestly, you'll probably be fine. It really takes practical hands-on experience to learn anything with breastfeeding. Hopefully, your hospital is breast-friendly and will have nurses and a lactation consultant who can help you in the process. That's what I plan to do, bug the crap out of them while I have them right there within my grasp!
yep, that's me. Thanks so much for the encouragement.I'm so glad to know I won't feel bad dragging DH to that class then. Did you stay for the baby care class? I hope it was better. I'm really looking forward to having the baby so I can just practice with it before I leave the hospital.
Good luck with your LO!!!
