Carmex?

I know how salicylic acid is a big no-no during pregnancy, and I noticed this morning that it's an ingredient in the carmex that I use religiously. Is this in all tube lip balms? I'm going to go crazy without this stuff!!

Re: Carmex?

  • I never noticed that.  I love it too and have it in a few different flavors/scents.  I'll be watching to see if any1 has any knowledge on this.

  • Naw, salicylic acid is the ingredient in Carmex that treats cold sores. It's also one of the ingredients that makes Carmex feel tingley, and it helps to exfoliate your lips. Most lip balms won't have this. I believe it's also one of the reasons that Carmex is actually physically addictive. It actually does nothing as a lip balm -- it dries your lips out, so you reapply, and this process actually leads to you relying on the Carmex for moisture, while it's sapping moisture out of them. I would switch to a different lip balm. I used to be addicted to Carmex until I heard that studies showed it was actually addictive or something, and my husband pointed out that the ingredients actually REMOVE moisture from your lips. Great for cold sores, not so much for everyday use, especially now that we're PG!
  • I use Burts Bees wax lip balm. There isn't any salicylic acid in that. I used to LOVE carmex but stopped using it because someone told me that there were ingredients that actually dried your lips out in the long run so you needed to use it more. Could be a hoax but I've found I'm much less dependent on any kind of balm since I stopped using it.

Now that I think about it, I'm not even sure why that would be an ingredient in lip balm at all. Weird.

  • I'm not really addicted to so much the brand as much as keeping my lips constantly covered in it. I HATE chapped lips and I have naturally really colored lips, so when they chap, I look like freakin' bozo. But thanks for all the replies! You are all so helpful :)

  • FYI - Salicylic Acid is bad if you eat it. Using it in face wash is not going to do anything.
  • I read somewhere that salicylic acid is ok if it's unders 5% which most face cleansers and I'm sure carmex is. I used carmex throughout my last pregnancy and everything was fine, and like the pp said it's not like you're eating it.

  • I know what you mean by needing something on your lips. I am the same way but was others have pointed out it dries out your lips causing you to use more. You might notice that if you change brands you dont need it as much. I use and LOVE SoftLips!
