Postpartum Depression

Anyone told they didn't have PPD

when you really did?

DS's pedi has done a PPD assessment at every regular appointment so far.  I fill out the form and answer the questions honestly.  I even brought it up myself a few months ago, but was told that it sounded like normal new mom stress and that I'm just learning to balance everything (I've been back at work full time since DS was 12 weeks old).

I'm just not so sure.  I mean, some days I'm fine, but others I'm a mess.  I used to just get angry and lash out at DH, but now I'm starting to angry with DS.  I had to hand him over to DH at least 3 times this weekend so that I could go cool off.  Neither of them are doing anything wrong, but I still just get so frustrated.  Sad

Re: Anyone told they didn't have PPD

  • First of all, your son is gorgeous!

I would talk to your own doctor.  Lots of moms need some extra help, and even though it is great your baby's doctor is screening you, you may need your own physician.  Good luck, and don't be too hard on yourself.

  • I say if u are noticing something is wrong, then u should make an appt with a doctor , preferably a therapist. I dont think pedi's are experts in mental health anyway.
  • I filled out the same forms at DS's pedi appts but got the feeling that they wouldn't know what to do if someone really did have PPD.  I had a really rough time and discussed it with my midwife.  I can totally relate going back to work early - I went back full time at 6 weeks pp.

I started to feel normal closer to 12 months.  I would not hesitate to talk to your own doctor about what you're experiencing.

  • I spoke with my OB the last time I was there (Dec) b/c I didn't know if it was PPD or just stress from work (layoffs, pay cuts, etc. happening) or the holidays.  I rarely take any meds, so she gave me some therapists' names.  I spoke to one of them and we think it's more baby-related stress than actual PPD b/c I don't have depressed feelings, more stress feelings if that makes sense.  It wouldn't hurt to talk to your OB who might be able to help you out more than the pedi.  Good luck!

He is a Pediatrician, not a Psychiatrist.  While he may see many moms with PPD, he has not specialized in this area of medicine.  Would you have your ENT diagnosis your LO?

Make an appointment with a professional to see what is up.

  • Thanks, ladies.  I have an appointment with my Dr. next week.  I'll bring it up then and see if he can refer me to someone who deals with PPD.

I'm glad to hear that you made an appointment with your own Dr. I expressed concerneds at one of the pedi appointments and was told that what I was feeling was normally. I still felt off and got the names of some therapists from my OB. Long story short, it was determined that I had a bit of PPD and PTSD. DD was a 'surprise' and I had a rough pregnancy due to health issues. Seeing a therapist was the best thing I could have done for myself and my family.
