3rd Trimester

Go against my doc? LONG -Advice plz

Quick back story-
Spent Sat. in L&D with BH about 3 min. apart. Cervix closed. Had a shot of terbutaline to stop them. Here is the longer post.
https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/29582096.aspx

Doc wanted me to come back in this morning to get checked again- just as a follow up from Sat. Had a bunch of BH last night and every 3 min again this morning. Told her as soon as she came in. (She is not my favorite doc in the group, not very personal or warm) She told me to hop up on the table, got out the doppler and says "can you tell me where their heartbeats are?" I am like-"um, what? I don't know?" -and thinking did she just say THEY? Then she says "when is the next time you go to see your high risk doctor?" I said- "I don't see a high risk doctor" As we both realize she thinks I am someone else completely who is pregnant with twins. Not off to a good start.
I said a few things to jump start her memory that she saw me 2 days ago in L&D and tell her how I am still having BH very frequently. She did check my cervix - still closed and long - and kind of rambles on about how I am just going to have to deal with this for the rest of my pregnancy and it may or may not mean anything. "You maaaay go into real labor or you maaaay still be induced at 42 weeks." She offers a Rx to relax my uterus. I suggest I take the meds only when I am going to have a heavy day with more walking or time on my feet than usual. I throw in that I am traveling to MD this weekend for my shower (I am in FL) and she says "I don't think you should travel...I also don't think you will go into labor but you are contracting at 31 weeks and I don't think you should go." Then she says- "I also don't think you should eat sushi but I may have had a few pieces during my pregnancy."

WTF kind of comparison is that?

The flight is 1.5 hours nonstop. I am checking my bags and going to my hometown. Clearly my OB group doesn't know me from Adam so it's not like I am worried about having to see another doctor if something happened and I have my records.

What do you think? Thanks girlies!

  • Can you get an fFN??? They are supposed to be good predictors of labor within the next two weeks. However, I don't know if you can still get them late in the pregnancy. I've gotten two - one at 22 wks and one at 28.

I got one! It was negative but she says they are only 97% accurate. I really feel like it's going to be fine.

  • Any chance you can get a second opinion before your trip?  If not, and this is just me, I'd take the Rx and go on the trip.  But that's just me and I have had a few pieces of sushi during my pregnancy.
  • It sounds like she was telling you that she is supposed to say "don't go" but that maybe it would be okay (that was a horrible analogy she gave you)!! I think you should go! But let everyone know that you need to sit as much as possible and have numbers on hand!

  • Seriously be careful here..my cousin had the same thing as you--was told not to fly, she flew up to NY for a wedding (from FL) and on the flight back she walked off the plane and went into labor immediately becuase of the air pressure changes and her condition (similiar to yours, BH constantly)

Her baby was 10 weeks premature and while okay, was in the NICU for a long time.  Just be careful and take it easy if you can, not always a good idea to defy doctors, I know some of them are over protective, but some of them really know what they're talking about.

    Just my two cents....

  • Well, it's a tough call honestly.  Most women I know have BH that are timable for WEEKS before they go into actual labor.  On the other hand, you really don't want to risk going into actual labor there/having the baby there and having to fly back with the baby while recovering (or at least I know I wouldn't).  Honestly, see if you can get a phone consultation with someone else at that practice who you trust and have seen before.  Speak with them about what's been going on and your trip and see what they say.

And I would say if you do start dialating/progressing at all, def don't go.  How long will you be gone for? Is it a trip you can reschedule (ie not a funeral, or wedding, just a visit?)

  • I would go to my shower. It seems like the doctor is just saying that to protect herself medically, but if it was her personal decision she may go herself (hence the sushi comment).?

I am a first time mom so you also may want to get some advice from women who have a little more experience. :)

I hope everything works out for you and that you get to enjoy your shower!

    Best of Luck!?

  • Honestly if my doctor told me not to fly I wouldn't... but if your going to I would make sure you have a copy of your records incase something happens and you need a doctor in your hometown.
  • I would call the doctors and talk to the doctor that you like..if there is one? and tell that doctor what happened at your appointment, and ask her what she thinks...
  • Difficult one. One one hand you want to enjoy your shower but on the other hand you have your child's safety to worry about. You don't trust your doctor to help you make this decision. So since you don't trust your doctor, you should take the dr out of the decision making. Get another opinion. Maybe another dr in the practice, or even your family dr. Consider changing offices all together. If you can't get an opinion you can count on from a dr you trust, then don't go. Showers can be re-scheduled. Put your baby's health first. You don't want a NICU situation in a town far from home. Good luck!
  • I wouldn't fly, not with having that many BH and the fact that you were in L&D to stop them.  Even BH can dilate you without knowing it.

I starting having BH and real contractions starting at 30 weeks and delivered at 37 weeks after being on tons of meds, being admitted mulitple time to stop labor and being on bedrest (my bedrest was started at 20 weeks).  I was 4-5 cm dilated for a couple weeks before they finally let me have him without trying to stop it.

We prayed to make it full term and we are very lucky that we didn't have a preemie in the nicu.  I did everything I could to keep him in.

The one thing I learned about my pregnancy is things can happen fast.  And by the way, my ffn test was negative but I still went into labor a week later and my cervix dilated a couple more cm during that episode.

    ditto.

  • I personally would not go.  I had some contractions due to an infection at around 24 weeks right before I was supposed to fly to Chicago for a big work conference, and the doctor told me basically the same thing--that he wouldn't advise traveling, but couldn't totally forbid it at that point.  I went with my gut and canceled the trip--not worth even the minimal risk for me.

Is there any way you could get a 2nd opinion from a doctor you trust more?

  • Do you really think another doc at the practice would go against her? It's a women's group and you know how girls are! I would just assume they all say the same thing. Siiiiiiiigh. Such a hard decision. I would never forgive myself if something did happen.

I would call to get a 2nd opinion but phrase it so they have an "out" to contradict the other doctor. I'd say something like, "I just saw Dr. A, she told me not to travel but I'm not sure I made all the facts clear, so I just want to see what you think."

Good idea. Maybe also ask if the concern is being away from my practice or flying all together.

  • I would talk to your reg doc about the pros and cons. I would ask if the pressure if the issue and if so, does she think you would be ok to be driven?

Where are you going in MD?  If it is Baltimore, GBMC has a great NICU and high risk center if you needed to go to L and D I would go there.

I would try to get a second opinion since you don't care for that dr.  I wouldn't go b/c I wouldn't want to take the chance.  Everything could be ok, but I wouldn't risk my baby's health.
